Subject: Folios and Mount Preferences

Hi All,

I am posting this on multiple lists, as the old MF3D
list is still not up.

I am very pleased with the new 3DWorld mounts,
and will probably use them in favor of the old
cardboard style most are familiar with. If I do
include these in future folios, how many of you
will not be able to view them? Should I include
a 3DWorld viewer with the next round of folios?

I currently have the Beta or "B" folio. Sorry for
being way behind on the tracking pages.

I have the Beta or "B" folio. I hope to have it
ready for Gary Cullen next week. Boris did have
the "A" folio at the convention. I believe this
is due to go to John Thurston next. David Kesner
had the International Folio, and it is on its way
to Paul Talbot.

Question for FOLIO II members (Brian's folio);
How are you guys communicating?

Any comments appreciated.

I enjoyed looking through your new viewers in Miami. SInce you like the
new 140mm mounts, will you be modifying your viewers so that both size
mounts can be viewed?

Sorry for my ignorance, but where can I find information about these new mounts?

Thanks for the compliment about my viewers. They were very well
received in Miami, but unfortunately it hasn't translated to many
orders! The pedestal version on display in Miami was for 140mm mounts,
with the hand versions 132. As these are all custom made, either 132
or 140 versions can be requested. I hope to have a dual-mount version
as well some time in the future.

Hi Kevin,

These have not been officially unnounced by 3DWorld, however they were
available for sale by Dalia in Miami for $1 each. I have 1000 as well,
so if anyone needs any I can also help in this.

This is an entirely new design from the old style they first came out
with, and I was directly involved in the revision. They have 52mm
square windows spaced 62mm apart. They have self adhesive tabs and snap
together using 6 posts. They are black, but include a white writing
strip on top. They are also thinner than the old ones.

I have reduced my mounting time at least in half using these, so even
if they are more expensive it more than pays for itself in free time!

I haven't been paying enough attention. Are these mounts "Saturn
compatible"?

I seem to recall the initial versions weren't quite compatible.

I was looking at both formats in your viewer and they both worked fine
for me. What would be the differenece in your "dual format" viewer?

With the Regal, I custom mill the slots after casting. Two of the
viewers on display had 132mm slots, one had 140mm.

But the other difference is the bottom of both mounts. Spicer-style
mounts are not symmetrical, and have 5mm between the bottom and the
window and 20mm from the top. 3DWorld mounts have 8mm frame all around.

In a dual mount version, the milling would be for the 3DWorld mount
with 142mm wide slots but also deep enough to center the images. To
accommodate Spicer, a U-frame would be inserted to accurately center
the cardboard mount.

My own (perhaps biased) opinion is to have a viewer that takes both
types of mounts. Saturns do not allow for this.

Sam,

SInce the new plastic MF mounts are getting positive reviews, an
adapter for your viewers to allow both the 132mm slides that shooters
already possess as well as the 140mm mounts that some may start using,
would be attractive to many. I own a Saturn viewer that gives a 65mm
view, and although there may be minimal clipping on the corners, gives a
nice large view that I like. It seems that this was accomplished by
simply sliding in a diopter lens behind the standard 78mm? lens. It
looks good to me, although it might not be to your optical standards.
With the very wide focusing range of your viewers, I wonder if filter
diopter rings could be glued behind your lens plate so that users could
experiment with screw in diopter lenses and view in a shorter FL if they
desired. The clipping in my viewer was due to the diopters being mounted
onto a separate board and due to the diameter of the diopters, not the
optics. I did this with my Keystone viewer with some success.
