Please remind me...who is the Sputnik fixer-upper?

Thanks.

I know Don Lopp (Seattle) has done some. Jim Harp does some excellent
mods as well, however I'm not sure he is offering a service. There are
also several do-it-yourself sites and kits. What is the problem you
need fixed?

The focusing gears slip on the left lens. There is a fix posted online
but it seems difficult. Plus I don't have many tools and have no
experience fabricating in metal.

I did, however, do the interior mod to eliminate internal reflections.
That worked very well and was easy to do. Additionally the camera
seems to be free of light leaks (so far), so I guess the only thing
that needs to be addressed is the focusing issue. It's a big one.

Hi

Is anyone doing this in the UK or US?

Or is there a recommended seller who does overhauled and perfectly working
Sputniks?

I purchased one off ebay from Moscow and there's a one stop exposure
difference between lenses. The one shot that came out well enough to use on
my first roll was amazing so I'm either going to do a kludge with a ND filter
(running a test now), see about repair costs or buy a refurb/new tested one.

Love to get one of the chinese ones but budget won't extend that far.

Don't kludge it. Too many Sputniks have too many kludges in them. It is best to fix it where it is broke.

There is linkage under the lenses that couple the F stops of the two lenses. It is adjustable. A round "nut" in the middle of the linkage can be loosened by turning CCW. Don't take it all the way out. Set the right lens on the tightest F stop you can and adjust the left F stop to match. Tighten the nut.

You may need to use pliers to loosen the nut and may want to use them to tighten it too but don't over do it.

I visually check for a match by keeping the shutter open on "B" and free viewing the apertures with the backs open.

You may have to repeat the operation again until you have them both the same size as things can slip as you tighten the nut.

Beware that you may have another problem. Sometimes a lens assembly can get twisted in the mounting and cause the F stop mismatch as well as shutter problems and gears on the lenses slipping.

i'm not sure if i'm competent enough in this department to attempt it.

is there anyone on the list in the UK who specialises in bringing the Sputniks
up to spec?

two test rolls coming back in a few hrs.... we'll see how they came out

Hi

Just got the 2 rolls back. Seems that both lenses are off by 1/2 a stop in either
direction....

I'll get 1/2 stop ND filter and see if that and exposure adjustment generates
workable results.

hi all

Follow on to my earlier post. Just called around and can't seem to find a 1/2
stop gel filter.

Any suggestions?

Or should i really get it fixed?

I'm open to recommendations

Yes. Fix the camera.

> Or should i really get it fixed?

Absolutely. I expect the time you spent looking for a filter is twice
the time it took to fix it yourself. As mentioned prior, there are
probably two common possiblilities as to why this is happening. Both
can be checked by simply looking through the back of the camera. Look
at the physical size of the apertures. If they are not equal, this is
your problem. Also cock to trigger the shutter while looking through
the back to make sure the shutters blades are closing. If not, SLOWLY
see if the left lens barrel (takeup side) is loose. If it is, this is
another problem.

Determine these and I'm sure we can help you with the rest. No need to
spend $100 in repairs for a $60 camera.
