I don't know if it's old news now but yesterday i tried to get MF Provia
400X in Yokohama and all I could found was 35mm. I was told that this MF
film will be available in Japan on october 10th.

Hi!

John Thurston sent me a couple of unmounted views produced with his 3D
World TL-120-1 and after just a few minutes examining them, I was convinced
that those 80mm lenses perform spectacularly. John's samples were taken
with a tripod, on Provia 100 film. With the goal being to see how the
lenses performed at f/8 and f/11, the DoF was a bit shy of ideal at
Infinity in both views, but that could happen with any lens and it did not
impact my very favorable assessment of these lenses. The image clarity of
these sample views in the fore- to middle-ground, where DoF was not a
factor, is just amazing for such a reasonably priced camera.

I pulled out some of my Mamiya 7 views, also taken on a tripod with Provia
100, in light similar to that seen in the views John sent me. At my light
table, comparing the Mamiya 7 views to the 3D World TL-120 views, first
under 3x magnification, then under 8x magnification, I can NOT detect ANY
difference in image quality. A more technical approach to quantifying the
resolution and contrast of Mamiya 7 lenses versus the 3D World lenses at
various f/stops, both at the center and at the corners of the frames, might
reveal a difference, but in terms of what I can see with my eyes, even at
8x, I do not find the 3D World TL-120 lenses to be in the least bit lacking.

This is so startling to me that I feel reluctant to put it in writing for
fear of not being found credible, but the Mamiya 7 views just don't look
any sharper to me than the TL-120 views. I've not yet handled the TL-120
itself, and am therefore not equipped to recommend its purchase, but one
thing's for sure - it can produce some really nice chromes.

The TL-120 views exhibit very high accutance (edge sharpness) and
resolution (detail). And I can not detect any difference in overall image
clarity in the corners of the frame versus the center. I know that the two
views were taken at f/8 and f/11, but even if the performance falls off at
wider apertures (due to aberrations), it's not likely to fall off at
smaller apertures because diffraction will not become visible until
somewhere between f/22 and f/32 at 4x magnification in an MF3D viewer. I am
very impressed.

If anyone would like to examine the views John sent me, just send me an
e-mail with your mailing address. I've mounted one and left the other
unmounted so that you can see how the pair comes from the camera. We can
mail them from person to person, but I'd like to get them back
eventually. Bill Glickman has them at the moment, but he'll be sending
them back to me shortly.

Why not scan the slides so that we can all see them without the bother and
expense of mailing?

I can scan one of the frames for you (on my 2400 dpi flatbed with
transparency adapter), but I would recommend looking at the real thing.
You're the first to show any interest, so I could put you at the top of
the mailing list, if you'd like. I'm just using a business envelope with
two very stiff pieces of cardboard cut to fit. Postage is just two first
class stamps on a fresh business envelope to mail it to the next guy, but
say the word and I'll send you a scan.

Thanks,

Mike
Subject: New 3D World TL-120-1 slide mounter

From: Dale Yingst
THe slide mounter I just got with my camera is a little
different than the one seen at NSA Miami. The light on mine is
too bright at full intensity but has a nice thumb wheel control
to lower it. Plus I like the thin plastic slide gauge with
multiple horizontal lines on it and three vertical etched
lines. I believe they are to help set the image at the window
or at infinity. It is like the gauge I use on my Sam only
wider. However it slips under the slide, leaving the top of
the images clear for hand adjustment. I like sliding a gauge
better than sliding the mount. And for the many of you that
don't use or like a gauge, it can just be slid out from the
mounter. There is still no adjustable focus but the lenses are
forgiving enough for accurate adjusting and decent viewing.

BTW, I was just kidding, but the changes needed for the
existing mounter would be relatively minor. I did modify my
Sam to do MF slides with different lenses and a different
lucite panel with gauge attached. The problem was having to
mount upside down with the folding cardboard mounts. WIth 2
piece plastic mounts, I can do it upright again.

First thanks to John Thurston for sharing the
slides.... and yes, I was quite surprised myself looking at these sample
slides. I also have shot all my stereo on M7 which is probably one of
the sharpest camera / lenses in the MF line-up. And yet, 3dWorld has
produced a camera at an amazing price point while not compromising the
optical quality. I concur with all Mikes findings regarding the image
quality this camera produces.
