Subject: 6x7 mounts ?

Hello, all,

I'm new, my name is Laura Johansen, and my husband and I have been shooting MF on a slide
bar for about a month. Just got the MF Viewer and mounts from one G Themelis ( Thanks
George, Love it !) and the square mounts to go with it, on saturday.

The thing is... all our film is 6x7, and the mounts are 52 x 52mm. Saw some other mounts
on D Millers site 3d stereo, but still small. We do have a smaller, 6.45 back for future shoots,
but, really like what we have. Does anyone produce a 6x7 mount? if not , have people made
there own, out of cardboard or something ? Would love any info or advice you all may have.

Thank you very much,

Laura

I am not aware of anyone having made a side-by-
side stereo mount to hold 6x7 transparencies.
I have seen 6x7 stereo images but they were
mounted in individual (not side-by-side) mounts.

If someone did make a mount to carry 6x7 images,
the overall width would have to be larger than
140mm or the frames and septum would have be be
_very_ narrow.

There is also the question of a viewer to use
for 6x7 images. I haven't looked to see if the
lenses in the 3D World viewer (aka MFPV) will
cover an image 7cm wide. The viewer seems to
me to be a bigger issue than the existence of
suitable mounts.

How about the standard viewer lens separation. I could view them,
because My viewer does have an adjustable interocular adjustment
capability, which is considered, by some, to be a worthless capability.

Welcome to MF3D Laura!

Although not mentioned, I assume you are taking horizontal 6x7 as
opposed to vertical, correct? One of the nice things about the
standard 6x6 format is that the side-by-side images approximate the
distance between your eyes, making it the largest film area possible
in a stereo slide without having to resort to mirrors or prismatic
lenses. This is why it is a standard.

6x7 is a little bit more of a tradeoff, since 70mm across is wider
than the distance between the average pair of eyes (especially women).
Although you may gain in a larger image, you may lose a lot more in
viewing.

I would suggest trying 6x6 instead, using a 75-80mm lens. Not only
will you get more in, but you will have a better depth of field. Also,
there are many difficulties with using a slide bar and a single
camera. One of the most common problems is when something moves
between shots, like water, leaves, clouds or people. This causes a
dissimilarity between the left and right pair known as "retinal
rivalry", which should be avoided.

Although I am sure you are comfortable with the single 6x7 camera, for
a very small investment you should be able to pick up a good Sputnik,
a Russian camera that will take instantaneous stereo 6x6 images. With
more choices in mounting, and more pairs of images per roll, it may be
more satisfying. Also, you would be able to share your images with
other MF3Ders!

Sam

Hi Sam,

well, actually since we shoot editorially, our " default " is vertical. ( Full Page/cover) These
will fit in the viewer, but stick out on top, which is, you know, not ideal.

Giving up the optics of two mamiyas and the control of nice slide bar for: a Sputnik, is not
the most
enjoyable prospect, but does seem , realistic. We live near the Chelsea flea, and have been
looking for one. I guess it's better than hand cutting odd sized cardboard mounts for the
forseable future. Have bought way too many camera in the last few months so, may wait a
bit on that. Although maybe I'll toss two Dianas on a slide bar, just for my own
entertainment.

Thanks !

Laura

Hi John,

Ahh, individual mounts! I usually just send the chromes out in sleeves, and have never
mounted an individual one, but that is an idea to look into. Will probably move to 6 x 6 at
some point, but, like a few I have at 6x7.

Not sure the name or manufacturer of my viewer, it is silver, steal the light, plastic, about
$ 35.00 from George Themelis. Very nice viewer for the price, really.

Thanks !

Laura

This is the 3D World viewer
A.K.A.
Unicolor viewer
Unicolour viewer
2QViewer
MFPV
(other names?)

The viewer of which Don speaks is a wonderful
viewer of his own design and manufacture.
As I recall it incorporates:
shorter focal length lenses
interocular adjustment
focus
illumination

I've had the privilege of spending a few
minutes with it several years ago and found
it to provide a very excellent viewing experience.
