Hi All

My Epson Photo perfection 2450 is on the way out - think the bulbs finally
going. The MF and other scans it used to very well now suck badly.

So looking for recommendations of other epsons which I can source used on
Ebay. When i originally got the 2450 I purchased from the US as it was still 1/2
price to UK.

Looking at ebay UK now, its not worth too much so figure a newer version of
the same model that does MF, 35mm and flatbed scanning.

Reviews and comments?

I am also in the market for a new scanner to replace my very aging Epson
1640SU Photo. I have done a lot of research and talked to a lot of people
and have decided that the unit that meets my needs best is the Epson 4990
Photo. This is not to be confused with the 4490.

My needs require both flatbed and film scanning in one unit. I need to
scan both unmounted film and all forms of mounted flat and stereo images
including 41x101 and medium format (especially the new 3D mount). I also
wanted Digital Ice ability as I scan very old and dirty images.

You can get all the specifics on the Epson site, but the one single
figure that drew me was the 4.0 Dmax. As a comparrison the 1640 has a
Dmax of 3.2. I was always disappointed at all the shadow detail I was
losing with the 1640.

Here is the site with probably the best overall in depth review of this
scanner:

As for price the 4990 is selling for $449.99US on Epson's site and as low
as $411.06 on sites like Amazon.com, and as low as $399.99 on eBay. Just
bew aware that many of the ones on eBay are "factory refurbished" units,
but still carry full factory one year warranty.

Hope that helps,

Yes, I did the Epson 4990. I am just waiting for my tax refund check to
arrive to purchase it.

But now that Dale Yingst pointed out that the Epson V700 may be only
$100.00US more I am wondering about that. Same Dmax but higher resolution
and dual scanning lenses.

There is a BIG difference between the two. Both in price and features. I
would highly recommend the 4990 over the 4490.

Hope that helps,
