Hi

Is there an ebay seller or company that will sell fully working, cleaned and
lubed Spuntiks. Would they take existing ones for the refurb.

I found the how to tutorials online but its still a big jump to mess around with
them for me. Simpler and less stressfull to just pay to get it done.

Anyone in the UK? Alt I can trade for a rare copy of 3D Museum.

Cheers

Mark,

I'm still puzzled by your reluctance to try fixing your Sputnik
yourself. Anyone who can use a Spud should be able to attempt a
fix-up. I gather yours is not working properly now, so what do you
have to lose? The flocking paper I sent you is on its way.

Ted Baskin had the best "fixed-up" Spuds on Ebay. I believe they were
fetching around $800 a year ago. If you're comfortable with that I'd
highly recommend his work. If on the other hand you would like to try
it yourself, just tell us what the problems are and I'm sure we as a
group can help. Both Chuck and I posted responses, but I didn't see a
follow-up.

As for eBay purchases by unknown sellers, you're asking for trouble.
Spuds listed as "mint" can simply mean they have never been used or
modified to work. Always ask if the seller has taken pictures with it,
and scans of the results. Also be sure of their return policy.

Sam

I too would highly recommend Ted's work, which involves a significant
rebuild, not just a basic tuneup. Take one Spud, add two Lubitels, a
polaroid viewfinder and a good bit of of expert labor and voila! I am
quite pleased with mine, although I never had the "pleasure" of using an
untuned Spud for comparison purposes. I figured it wasn't worth wasting
the film. Anyway, the total price for a Baskinized Spud can be quite a bit
more reasonable than the ebay price quoted if you supply him with the
parts, as I did. :-) You should contact him for details if you don't want
to do any mods yourself and can't find anyone to do a lower cost basic
tuneup for you. -Linda

I'll also recommend Ted's work.

My original Sputnik worked fairly well (except for light leaks) until
one of the middle elements on one of the lenses got loose and started
screwing up the focus. Kiev USA (who I bought it from) eventually got
it working again. I wouldn't recommend them.

After that Ted tuned up my Sputnik a couple of times (they tend to
creep out of sync). The camera held up about two years between
tunings. After I dropped the Sputnik on a concrete floor (shattering
the body and one door) he took the parts, a stripped Sputnik body I
had, and used some Lubitel parts to make a very nice Fraken-Sputnik.
He was able to test the new shutter set up and label the shutter body
with the correct speeds.
