Subject: Call for Medium Format Stereo Slides for the NSA/ISU Exhibit
Date: 2007-05-27 21:46:21
From: Sam Smith
Hi all,

I am progressing with the display for the NSA/USU convention in July.
Medium Format stereo will be represented by a custom built display
that will be a walk-around structure with three sides. Each side will
have a slide viewer on rollers, and four views per side.

That means I will need twelve pairs of slides for the exhibit. I am
looking for people who would like to put their best work on display
for 100s to see during the convention. I really want to show the world
the MF3D advantage. I've seen so many outstanding images in the folios
over the years, I know all of you are quite capable of doing the
format justice.

What I would like to do however is have all the folio members think
what some of the better shots were over the years (or even today). Do
you have a favorite of someone else's work? If something comes to
mind, please email me and I can see if I can convince the owner to
lend it out for the show.

For example, Mike Davis's Glacier shot, John Long's Giraffe image
through the window, Boris's flood shot, etc etc. I can think of dozens
I'd love to see in the show.

All slides will be cared for, and they will be displayed behind
plexigless to protect them. I will also have them returned registered
mail. I would need the images within 5 weeks of course.

Any ideas, please email me with suggestions.

Thanks,

Sam

This call is for Brian Reynold's MF3D Folio as well, but I do not have
a contact list for this. I'd appreciate it if someone could forward
this email for me.

Thanks, Sam

Will it be possible to swap images in and out of the display after it is set up?  Or will that be too cumbersome?

If it is easy, one idea is to start with a group of known slides, and, depending on who shows up with what, replace them periodically during the convention with
images that a number of us might want to "vote" on for that purpose.  That would give general NSA/ISU participants a look at more images and could be kind of fun.
I plan on bringing MF slides to Boise, but have never participated in a folio.  Anyone else in that situation ?

Also - as a side note, since, a few days ago,  I finally committed to coming - I am available for assisting in any MF events - let me know if you'll need help.  I'll be there Wed. night till Saturday.

Because I couldn't be sure who in the folio was receiving this list
(or the previous one), I've moved to using a private list for
communicating about the folio I run. I'll copy this to my list and
have the members reply directly to Sam.

No. The images will be pre-labelled and sealed for the show. Removing
them in between will cause problems.

This isn't a competition, but rather a promotion. No images will be
voted or judged. The original concensus is merely for images people
would like to see again from those they've seen over the years (or
perhaps heard about). Although I did use the word "best" in the
description, I meant it in the spirit of those memorable images that
will attract interest to MF3D. I certainly have my own favorites as do
others, but have always rejected the concept of grading images best or
worst. If someone took the time to include them in a folio, they must
have merit in the eyes of the artist who took them.

The reason for asking for folio members was that these images have
been seen by dozens or people. That makes it a fairer comparison from
those that have not been previewed by others previously. I am always
amazed how poorly I judge my own work. The shots I am fairly happy
with seldom get a lot of attention, while the occasional "throw in"
shot sometimes gets a lot of praise.

I have no problem including non-folio members, especially those who
show their work at clubs or comptetitions. I'd like to include an
image by Hai Tran as example, as he is constantly showing his images
locally and has received a lot of praise. He has only "guested" in the
folios though.

Bear in mind, the exhibit is NOT the main attraction for medium format
stereo this convention. There will be a MF3D event on Friday. This is
a room has been reserved for viewing, sharing and discussing MF3D.
I'm sure it will be posted in the schedule. This has always been the
highlight for me, as everyone brings their own images to share. At
least two folios will also be there to view.

Finally, the lounges and sitting areas around the hotel are where you
can typically spot a MF3D viewer being passed around. There will be no
shortage of opportunities to experience MF3D at NSA/ISU 2007!

Yes the "Medium Format Meeting/Discussion and Image Sharing" is set for
1:00 to 2:00 pm, Friday the 13th in the Payette River room. It is on the
schedule on the website and will be listed in the program.

Many people have told me something wasn't on the schedule yet. If you
have been to the site once already you may need to refresh your browser
or delete your cache to see what is current. I am updating at least once
or twice a week now.

We have been given two hospitality rooms in the hotel for the duration of
the convention/congress. So far I have no real plans for them so a stereo
viewing and sharing lounge is very possible. Also the large entrance area
of the Convention Centre where registration will be located would be a
great place to gather and share.

PS - pre-registration closes on the 10th of June so if you haven't sent
yours in yet please do.

I haven't been in the folio that long, but some of the more memorable shots I've seen:

La Ronde Amusement Park Montreal or Spinelli Toyota by Dale
Burnt Manzanita 2006, Top of Cascade Fall 2005, or Yosemite Fall Reflection 2006 by David Lee

Agree with Giraffe Manor by John Long

And these shots were from a folio I don't belong to, but Dave Casey and Don Lopp brought it by to share:

Si Bon by Paul Shay
Lambeth by Boris (love the light)
almost anything by Don Lopp (maybe a Mt Rainier at midnight, or Mt Hood framed by a Japanese Maple, or one of Mt Shuksan (I've got that one here -- it always makes people gasp).

That's what we want - gaspers!

I'm sure we also need something from you, Sam, and Oleg, and Jim Harp, and Dorothy, and Linda, and Gary, and Ted, etc, but I haven't been around long enough to know the titles.
