I kind of like the Chinese 80x140 plastic mounts for their 52mm
apertures. A couple of things I don't like about them is the very small
labeling area and the one-size aperture.

I think I can take care of the small label space by using a Brother or
Dymo labeler to print adhesive labels. Since the available aperture is
52mm square, I think the limited aperture options could be addressed
with some different slip-in masks (everything I want is smaller than
52mm square).

In Boise, I got to see Werner's aluminum masks which appeared to be
thicker than would be required for use inside the 80x140 mounts but had
a really nice feel to them. Unfortunately, I didn't have an opportunity
to ask for a sample. Too much to do and too little time!

My question is what is the correct material for these masks? Is
aluminum still the correct choice? Which alloy? How thick? Werner's
were the only aluminum masks I have ever actually had the opportunity to
see and feel.

Is there some form of mylar that would be preferable?

Hi John!
I think I have one of these masks from Werner, because I had the idea
to reproduce them here in Berlin. I got this mask from Mr. Kirwald who
is a great MF3D enthusiast and is producing very nice MF-camera
rollfilm conversions. Anyway, if you are interested, I can send you
the sample mask to your address. The only thing you have to do is
mailing me your address!
Kind regards from Berlin/Gemany, Chris

Lieber Herr Scheucher!

Roughly translated:

Dear Mr Jachner,

"Which mounts are you referring to, the 6x13 ones made from high grade
steel with the folded edges? Do you think the Americans are ready for
such cutting technology?"

Reply:

"Dear Mr. Scheucher,

You're right. This may be too extreme for those who use cardboard and
scotch tape. It's best just to confuse them and talk about the weather."

Just teasing. I would like to hear more about the steel mounts and the
viewer with the magnetic advance system though!

AFAIK, there are no language restrictions here, Harry.

If I restrict myself to learning only from English speakers
and writers I'm not going to learn much :( I'm happy to
run their comments through babel fish and use my rudimentary
German to decipher what they have to say.

Hi Guys! Sorry, for confusing you with German language ;-)

Dear HARRY, I´m gtlad to give you a short translation, even though
Sam already did his best!!! (SAM, thanks a lot for your humor and
GREAT translation :-)))

I told JOHN I would send him my sample of a 6x13 metallic MF stereo
mount, because I thought that it might be one of those he saw at
your MF stereo meeting!

After that Mr. Scheucher asked me in German a few questions about
the shape of this mount and I answered in German not thinking that
some of you might not understand - one more sorry.

So, here comes my English version!!!

This mount measures exactly 6x13cm and is a metallic one. The top
and bottom side are folded to hold the slides. So, the mount is made
of only one part (custom made). The slide must be additionally glued
in. It has a very slim shape and was made for a table viewer, which
does its slide trasportation by a magnetic system, that picks up the
slides. SAM, I don`t know the name of this viewer. It`s not a custom
made, but I can ask a friend of mine about the name and the
producers (he has got about two of these viewers! Please tell me, if
you want to know it!

JOHN, I´ll send you the mount tomorrow (25th of July)!

KIND REGARDS TO EVERYBODY(hope you can read my German-English better
than my German!)!!!

Chris. Danke mein guter Freund! Das ist eine gute Ubersetzung.:-)

Sam. I like your translation too but I think your German needs a
little work. ;-)) So does mine!

Thanks guys. I'm following the topic with interest.

Thank you, Mr. Scheucher! I just had a long call with Mr. Kirwald
about the mount and viewer, which I saw the first time when I visited
him, and this is exactly what he told me! So, special regards to you,
Mr. Scheucher, from Hubert Kirwald!

Dear John, I`ve been sending you the mount today in the morning. It
should arrive in Alaska in about 6 to 8 days! Please let me know when
it arrives!

Subject: "Denver Digital" E-6 processing

From: lnygren@pol.net
Denver Digital Imaging Center "a division of The Slideprinter"
offers E-6 processing services, and I received a "postage paid"
mailer to try from Chuck Holzner while at Boise. They offer E-6 120
film processing for $4.50 per roll, 36 exp 35mm for $7 per roll,
including postage both ways if you get their mailers. $10 minimum
order on film processing.

Anyway, I decided to send them 8 rolls of 35mm film which I mailed
from the Boise airport last Wednesday (before going through
security), and was pleased to receive them back in Minnesota today
(Wednesday) via Priority mail. They were sleeved and rolled in a
heavy cardboard tube inside a Priority box, and appear to be
properly processed and undamaged. FWIW. I of course wrote: DO NOT
CUT OR MOUNT in multiple places on the order form and on the
zip-lock bag holding the film canisters, since there isn't a
specific place for "special instructions".

It looks as if this may be a good and economical option for 120
film, especially. Has anyone else had any experience with them?

Hello Linda,

Yes. I sent them 6 rolls of 120 Provia and Astia while at NSA.
Driving home, I stopped at a few National Parks and sent them
another 5 rolls from Wyoming. The first batch arrived home the
day after I did, so took 1 1/2 weeks round trip. I did not ask
for priority mail and did not get it. The film was in sleeves
and cut to lengths of 3 frames, packed between cardboard. All
images are flat and don't need hanging. The images look to be
properly exposed and developed, I don't see any scratches on the
film either.

All I need now is time to mount them. I have another pack of 5
rolls coming from "Denver Digital" that I mailed from Wyoming
which should be here soon. I also sent two rolls to A&I ( for
control) at the same time. I will make comparisons.

So far so good and at less than half what it cost with A&I.

My 8 rolls went over $50 (8 x $7) and thus received free expedited
return shipping. -Linda

Linda received hers in rolls and you received yours cut and flat.. .
Did you specify "do not cut" as Linda has mentioned she did?

I certainly don't want my film cut as it may hang on my wall for months
before I have an opportunity for a mounting session. I don't have any
shooting records. How deep it is on the hook is my only indication of
how old it was or when I took it :)

My film was 35mm. Chuck's was 120, I believe. I am sure that if you
wrote: DO NOT CUT, they would accommodate you for the 120 film also.
The cardboard tube they used for my rolled film was 120 size. -Linda

Wal Mart processes E-6... usually 3 - 4 days, AND, its the best E-6
possible, as its sent to Fuji's headquarters for processing. And as
with everything else in WalMart, dirt cheap....

I took slightly longer than 8 days but it finally
arrived in Juneau. It was slightly bent in transit
but it will flatten out and certainly helps my
understanding. Thank you, Chris :)

Hi John,

Any chance of you posting some photos of this mount? Some
dimensions would be nice too.
