I'm kicking myself for not taking the time before the convention. I
had received the Beta folio before the convention, but was too busy
with the display and other matters to have a look at it. I figured I'd
wait until the show. At the convention, I was so busy talking with all
my 3-D friends, I did not have the time to look at the folios.

Now I am back home and got a chance to look through the folio I have
in my posession. That's when I start finally appreciating the images
that were inside. Along with beautiful images by all the folio members
(Gary, Dorothy, Philip, Don, Bob, Jim, John and Linda), I came across
one image that I almost immediately dismissed. It was called
"Imprisoned Wildflowers" by Oleg Vorobyoff. I did not like it because
it had broken one golden rule of 3-D: half the image was not really
stereo. It was bare pavement with little of interest and few depth
cues. But before I posted my comments, especially after reading the
title, I gave it a second look. It was an image divided diagonally by
a bright orange plastic fence. One side is dry flat concrete, the
other lush green bushes and glowing yellow flows. I get it!!!!

Thanks Oleg for contributing this image. It made me think outside the
3-D box. This is what 3-D art is all about. Had I not forgot my
digital camera in Boise I would post this image (if Oleg would let
me). I just wanted to acknowledege this brillaint image. I just wish I
had seen this while Oleg was still right in front of me at the show!!!
I would have also like to have put it in the display for others to
comment. Maybe next year!

Sam,

What is this "display" you are referring to ? Something you built yourself?

Sam made a spiffy display for some MF slides.

I took a couple of pictures of it. I'll try to get them posted where
you can see them.

I have placed a cross-eye image of the display at:
http://www.alaska.net/~thurston/images/SamViewer.JPG

Please feel free to use any application you like to manipulate
the image any way you like to put it in any format you like and
post it anywhere you like for any purpose you like.

Please contact me off-list with any technical problems with the
image or its availability.

Thanks for the picture John.

I asked because I'm also building a display (a kind of 4 feet sided cube,
holding 20 viewers). The funny thing is I also use ABS pipes to hold my
structrure. I'll post some pictures when it is finished.

There were several different slide displays at Boise. Two contained MF
slides, and three others contained 35mm slides.

I feel Sam's had a definite advantage over some others because the
sliding viewer assembly meant there were slides visible to the passing
audience. Even while someone was viewing a slide, someone walking by
could see that there were cool slides available for viewing. They
could grab a viewer on one of the other two sides or wait a minute for
this one.

Boris' "trash can" viewers, while cool and containing very nice views,
hid their contents. There wasn't an attention getting aspect to them to
draw an audience.

The Hookah and Medusa viewers contained some interesting views but until
you actually sucked your face up to a viewer, you were unable to see
what was coming.

I have some pictures of the other viewers I hope to get posted soon.

Did anybody get a picture of the display on Sunday? When the display
was up on Friday and Saturday, I found the bright yellow extension
cord distracting, so I opted to cover part of the display with black
cloth. This hid the 3-D pentagrams formed from the cable supports. I
did not get a picture of this, but before I removed some slides sunday
morning, I removed the black cloth. Since I no longer own this, it
would be great to have a picture of it in its conceived form for my
own records.

thanks,

Sam

I agree. Open-frame viewers do, IMO, promote good discussion and
interest, especially in a public venue like the Stereo Art Gallery.

But you gotta admit, the viewer sculptures themselves created a lot
of motivation to look at the images (e.g. will they be as wild as the
sculptures themselves ??).

Since I now own this fine viewer I can take that picture for you.
Unfortunately it is disassembled right now so I will need to put it back
together and find a space for it. Once I do I will send you the images.
If I would have thought about this sooner I could have photographed it
with your digital camera seeing as how I had that also *{;-)

PS - your camera and tools were shipped on Monday so you should be seeing
them soon. Please let me know when they arrive.

I have another image without the black cloth.
I'll try to get it posted in the next couple days.

Sorry Sam. The image I have without the cloth is a
pathetic image and does not effectively show the support
wires.

I saw you had a slide with a somewhat similar theme in the very same folio:
a down-and-outer on the sidewalk in the foreground, a billboard showing a
wealthy person in the background, and a fence running between them. Good
eye (or eyes), Sam. Anyway, I do ordinarily try to tell my story in terms
of depth, since that is the strength of the 3D medium. So my wildflower
slide does warrant criticism for its lack of depth. On the other hand, one
of Ray Zone's points during the Stereo Art panel discussion was that we
stereo fanatics are too hung up on depth and that art should serve some
higher purpose. I figure that this should not be an either or proposition.
If good picture presents itself I say grab it.
