Subject: Heads up, MF viewer has been discontinued!

The popular 3D World hand-held viewer
(http://home.att.net/~sales3d/WMediumFormatviewer.htm) has been
discontinued. As far as I know, only Dalia and myself have a few in stock.
There are no plans to make more of these viewers. When I tried to order
more last month, and they told me that the product was discontinued, I did
not really believe it, but now it is starting to sink in.

I don't know why they are doing this... There are some rumors that they will
introduce an upgraded model with focusing and internal illumination, but
right now there is gap in inexpensive MF viewers and nothing to cover it.

I just sold 10 viewers to a local photographer who is marketing his 3d MF
slides and wants to have viewers to sell with his slides.

I have 15 more viewers in stock. Once these are gone, there will be no
more. Asking price: $35 per viewer or $30/viewer for ordering 3 viewers or
more, plus shipping.

Personally, I like the viewer and I think that $35 is a bargain. At some
point, when there was an importer involved, the retail price of these
viewers in the USA was up to $100 and some people paid this price. In my
last order of 50 viewers from this importer, I paid $75 per viewer! So, $35
for this viewer with superb achromatic lenses, is a steal, IMO.

You've been warned :)

It's still on their website - although I suppose that doesn't count for much.

If true, this is a big shame - the value in those lenses can't be beat.

Has anyone just flat out asked them why?

Dalia's November newsletter (issued via e-mail yesterday) said that the 2Q
viewer (3DWorld's medium format STL viewer) has already been discontinued
because a new illuminated viewer will soon be offered by 3DWorld. The
newsletter didn't say whether this new viewer would have adjustable focus
or not. It only said that it was illuminated. An inexpensive, readily
available, illuinated viewer with adjustable focus would be a dream come
true for many of us, I'm sure. I sent her an e-mail yesterday asking if
it has adjustable focus, but she hasn't responded yet.

Hi All, in my correspondence with Cuca at 3D World, the new
ILLUMINATED, FOCUSING (definate) viewer was actually finished by the
engineers, but the BOSS, Mr Lu, wasn't quite happy with it and gave
instructions to modify a few things. It will now be about two months
till it's ready. Also, the price will be not much more than the old
viewer !@*# This is absolutely great! Trying to sell to customers on
the basis of the "steal the light" viewers has been hard, so this new
one will be the "ants pants"!
I'm glad Mr Lu has taken the time to get it right the first time,
instead of a string of revised models.
Happy, 3D-ing, Peter

Dalia knows as much as I know... Neither of us has seen the viewer, and we
do not know what the resale value will be. We were told that the viewer
will have focusing and internal illumination. I was also told that the new
viewer has "different" lenses. I hope they are achromatic, or we might be up
for a disappointment.

I fully agree.

But I also think it is nice to have the option of the simple, indestructive,
battery-independent viewer w/good lenses. When I asked why are they
discontinuing the simple viewer, since I think there is room for both, and
why are they doing it before the new viewer is out, I was not given a
convincing explanation.

In the meanwhile, there is another interesting viewer that is coming out
from 3D World. This is a folding viewer. It is marketed primarily for
stereo prints (comes bundled with 12 prints, copies of their slides) but it
can also be used with slides. I have 3 samples in my hands and have placed
an order which I think will come before the end of the year.

Hi George,

Can you tell us more about the folding viewers? What type/quality of
lenses, construction, size, weight, possible price, maybe pictures?
Might they work with Holmes style stereo cards?

This, and the new viewers, is sounding very good!

Hi George:
Do you have any viewers left?   I may want 5 if I can find them.

Hi Bob et al.,

I found a stock of 10 viewers.  That's all I have now.

However, because of the delay of the new viewer, 3D World offered to make a special run of 100 of these viewers.  I had the choice of color, and I chose black (if you remember, these viewers were originally made in black, before 3d World settled to silver.)  I don't know when I will have these viewers, maybe in a month?  Price of these black viewers will be $35 plus shipping.  This might be the last production run of the handheld viewers.

In the meanwhile, I am offering these 10 silver viewers for $30 plus shipping, first come. first serve.

The new focusing & illuminated viewer sounds good, but since no one has seen a prototype or heard specific details. I am a bit worried about the lenses.  I was told that this new viewer will have different lenses than the hand-held viewers. I hope they are still good quality achromatic lenses.

Someone asked about the price of the MF camera going up.  That's just me. The price of these camera has remained the same since their introduction over a year ago.  In the meanwhile the dollar is going down the drain.  For anyone paying in Canadian dollars, Euros, or British pounds (and maybe other currency), the price of the camera in US dollars has been dropping.  There will be a correction in 2008.
