Subject: "Daddy Tran: A Life in 3-D" premiers in Toronto next monthDate: 2008-03-18 18:40:39From: Sam Smith
The Hotdocs International Documentary Film Festival in Toronto will be
screening the much anticipated film "Daddy Tran: A Life in 3-D" by Sui
Ta. It will show Friday April 18 at 9:30pm - Isabel Bader (93 Charles
St.West) and Saturday April 19 at 4:30pm - Al Green Theatre (750
Spadina Ave.)
Many on this list will be familiar with the work of Hai Tran. His
outstanding still medium format stereo images have been shown at the
previous Miami and Boise NSA conventions, which he attended himself.
Hai's been a good friend of mine for over 20 years, and I am very
happy that he is able to share his 3-D life and story with an
international film audience.
From the website:
"Six years ago, 65-year-old photographer Hai Tran fell in love with
3-D photography and is on a mission to share its wonders with as many
people as possible. His passion for photography began as a child in
Vietnam, continued when he fled with his young family in a small boat
with three cameras and a suitcase of photographs, and culminated in
Calgary where he eventually opened one of Canada's largest vintage
camera stores. Director Siu Ta reveals the history of the family
through Hai's wonderful photos as well as intimate and funny stories
from his wife and children. Ta captures Hai's ebullience when a moose
poses for his camera, his joy as he shows his work to strangers and
his sadness as he is forced to close the store. Hai's charisma,
volatile personality and love for photography light up this film. In
English and Vietnamese with English subtitles. "
Although portions of the film were actually shot in stereo, the final
version is standard 2-D. I encourage anyone who may be in the Toronto
area this April to not miss this opportunity, as the festival sells
out quickly.
