Hi,
I have been using a Sputnik for years with a Vivitar 283 and I just
recieved a TL-120 and since its the first camera with batteries that I
want to use a Vivitar 283 flash on I was wondering if I need to get a
safe synch to use with it or are those just for Digital cameras?
Thank You.

I have been using a Vivitar 283 with my TL120 directly with no problems.
Be aware though that there are two different versions of the 283 - one
with high trigger voltage and one with low trigger voltage. There is no
way to tell which is which without actually measuring it. I have not done
this so I do not know which I have in the three or four that I use.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the reply, I don't have a voltage meter but I did a little more research and it looks like the Vivitar 283's from Japan are high voltage compared with other countries. Mine are from Japan. Will it hurt the TL-120? I really don't want to buy another flash or a safe synch unless it will hurt the camera.
Thank You

How do you know where one comes from. I can't see any manufacturer
marking anywhere on the three I have.

I did buy a Wein Safe Sync to use these with my Pentax K10D as I knew a
high sync voltage would damage its circuits.

I do not think that the hot shoe of the TL120 is connected in any way to
the electronics so it should be safe. As I said I have not had any
problems so far.

Hope that helps,

David,
Thanks David,You saved me some money.
It has the country of origin on the bottom of the flash.

All three of mine are "made in Japan". So if it holds true that those are
a higher voltage trigger, then I can say without a doubt that it does not
harm the TL120.

That also means I am glad I bougt the Wein Safe Sync for my K10D.

Thanks,
