How large can the film gates be made on a baby heidoscop?
I think they start at 45mm square. How many more mm can you
get?

The height of the film gate is limited by the width
of the 127 film.

I realize that, but the width of the film gate isn't. The
construction of the camera limits that. If one takes a file
to the outside edges of the film gate, how much can they be
widened?

John,
I believe the "Baby" Heidoscop uses CZJ 55mm Tessars. If these are
the same as the 55mm "wide angle" Tessars used in the VP Exakta
system they should be able to cover 40mm by 65mm. As they aren't
coated modern lenses, you'll probably see a fair amount of flare
effects which will limit their performance. If you're looking for
custom cut 127 film - I know of a source - e-mail me offline.

That's a pretty big circle, and it's really good to know,
but it doesn't address my initial question:

How wide can the film gates be made on the baby heidoscop?

Does anyone have a baby they can measure?

I don't have a Heidoscop but I do have 45x107 Verascopes. I think the
limiting factor will be the central viewing device. On the Verascopes
it's a prism, and on the Heidoscop it's a reflex viewing screen.
You'd have to modify the film transport extensively in order to expand
the area outward - so I think that circumventing the central viewing
mechanism would be the most practical approach. I had thought about
removing the lesboards from the Verascopes and mounting them on a 4x5
view camera with wide angle bag bellows to allow for the 55mm focal
length. But up until now, I haven't encountered a Verascope without
annoying flare issues, plus nearly all of them use four or five
element lenses which make aftermarket lens coating very expensive.
