Hi Don... I wrote you off-list to seek your permission to respond to
your off list post regarding this subject, but your server rejected me
as a spammer.... since their is nothing personal in here, I thought it
would be best to respond in the forum.

90% of what I wrote was about MF
viewers, i did make a quick comparison to 35mm viewers..... I am sorry
if I did this on the MF list, does this address your question?

Well, I wish someone would do it already??

a "bit" soft? OK......

or, maybe its the optics? what
vintage is the film? Modern film? 1960's Kodachrome? I have several
25mm fl lenses which are well corrected.... Velvia / provia f, film
looks spectacular, even at 10x mag. If the optic delivers a non
aberrated view to your eye, film still looks fabulous at 10x.... but
when you see a poor view, often the film is blamed....how does a print
look from good tranny film at 10x? Crappy?

I can assure you this is not the
case, and I have excellent vision and use mine on a regular basis.....

I agree Don, hence why I was forced
to design / build my own optics.... They are nearly diffraction limited
over the entire film radius, producing MTF values over 70% MTF, over
80% of the image area, with less than <1% distortion. I would not
classify this optic as, "less than sharp". Instead, i would classify
it as, ultra sharp. I have only seen a few optics sharper, as they
were designed with a very small FOV.

I've seen quite a few LEEP viewers and they vary widely from "a bit soft" (quite sharp, really) to "soft" (not really sharp at all.)

I think the cause is the way the elements are "mounted". Which is not at all precise. The quality of the view can be improved by tweaking the element placings. Also the LEEP viewer slide holding arrangement is not too good at holding the image parallel to the two viewer lenses which can give all sorts of problens.
