Subject: Flash With Sputnik?

Hello again, All;
Thanks for the mounting / viewer advice that was sent privately. Gee, I really have been getting my money's worth from this forum! Is there a maximum amount of questions allowed before one gets annoying? ; P
I've been running quite a few rolls through my Sputnik and I'm happy with the results I'm getting - it's been all outdoor photography so far, and I'd like to be able to move indoors and take a few shots, at family functions, etc.
I'd be very interested in knowing how others utilize flash with their Sputniks, in terms of how one would go about mounting a flash unit on the camera, what settings are preferable (is the 'B' setting valid) et al....
Thanks In Advance!

There's not really a convenient way to mount a flash on the camera, but
you should have no problem finding a bracket that holds a flash that
you can also mount the camera on.

The fastest shutter speed works fine for a flash. The circuit to make
the flash fire is completed when the shutters are completely open. So,
you might as well use the fastest speed unless you're also intending
for the light in the room to contribute to the exposure.

The general rule of thumb is that whenever something is moving in the image area, use the highest available shutter speed to keep "motion ghosts" from appearing.   However, if you are shooting still subjects, like scenics with sunsets, use of slower shutter speeds to intentionally use a combination of available light with flash fill can produce some very interesting results, especially for 3-D.  This is because foreground objects that might just appear as black silhouettes, or be lost in the closer dark areas, are now illuminated for closer depth cues.   In some cases, such as back-lit daylight shots, flash fill can extend the dynamic range for more natural appearing images, also desirable in stereo.

Hi

I was using my Metz 45CT 4 so it had a handle and base plate built in.

Results are really good.

I use the least expensive flash-bracket I could find at B&H.

If I'm going "simple", this bracket then holds my Vivitar
285. If I'm going "complicated", this bracket holds a
little flash and I use a Wein "peanut" on my Vivitar. In
the "complicated" arrangement, the Vivitar is then
positioned somewhere else in the room on a table-top tripod
or I convince someone in the room to hold it for me.

For my "little" flash, I use either a Canonete D flash or
the twin-head Opti-Flash from a Nimslo. I really like the
Opti-Flash with the exception that it is the slowest cycling
flash ever made.

I usually use 1/100sec shutter speed.

You should check the archives of this and the "old" list.
The Sputnik/flash question has been hashed out in years past
and there is a lot of good information there.

What is the name of the 'old' list so I can look it up?

is one place to access archives on Yahoo of the previous MF group "mf3d-
forum" from 3/03 to 6/06 (mirroring the main UNH hosted group
MF3D.Forum), but I presume that these are only accessible to the 34
people who are still "members" of that now inactive group (vs 220 on
this group). Are there other archives out there? -Linda

Older posts used to be archived at http://www.pauck.de, but that no
longer seems to be the case.
