Subject: Will there be a new medium format stereo camera?

I was over at http://www.stereoscopy.com/news/ following up on
the Fuji stereo digital camera, when I saw a photograph of a pair
of stereo Holgas.

Does anyone know anything more about them?

Sounds like a Chinese Sputnik aka Lubitel .   Well, that's probably too flattering - probably not as good as a Sputnik.

Gosh, a Holga Stereo Camera. This may to a certain extent be my fault. A year and a half or so ago I wrote an article about "Holga Stereoids" for Lightleaks magazine, a publication connected to www.toycamera.com.

http://www.lightleaks.org/images/ll6_preview.pdf

Toycamera is one word for the Holga, "the worst camera around" another one.
First of all: Every Holga has its own characteristics, i. e. faults. So I opted for the cha-cha technique to get at least similarly faulty stereo pairs. Due to the heavy vignetting and the blurry edges of each shot, the stereoscopic result is rather interesting than brilliant.
Focussing is a matter of luck, and a normal Holga camera has three lighting settings (sunny / clouds / B). Yet there is absolutely no difference betwwen "sunny" and "cloudy". The pictures you can see in the article were taken with ISO 400 roll films, each frame of each pair having been exposed two to three times (on a tripod).
The good thing about the Holga: You can find rather inexpensive ones on ebay. Do rather not buy from www.lomography.com or the like, they sometimes charge twice the money.
This is rather a fun camera than a serious competitor to the cameras around.

I hacked a Holga stereo camera about 15 years ago. You can see it in
my photo-3D album (Roderick's 3D) here:
http://tech.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/photo-3d/photos/browse/e0bc
Also note the Swiss Cheese MF pinhole camera. The Holga
images are OK for that type of camera. I never had light leak
problems, just a bit soft focus as you would expect from any single
lens uncoated plastic lens. I would bet that these stereo Holga's
become available, since they are already making several other weird
Holga cameras. Note that they are re-manufacuring the Diana again.

Hello Andreas,

As I know you visited Photokina this week, did you take a close look
at those Stereo Holgas on display (which Alex photographed) and can
you tell us if those were hacked mono Holgas or a new stereo body ?
The reason I ask is that the hacked Holgas that Espresso shows on
his flickr page look fairly different from the ones on Alex's
pictures. Also, they are offered by "Universal Electronics Group"
as pre-production models. So it's difficult to tell if the plan is
to produce integrated stereo cameras with synched functions (if we
can call it that where an Holga is concerned) or just splice two
mono Holga and glue them together with crazy glue.

Come to think of it, one or the other may produce about the same
results, given those cheap plastic lenses ! ;-)

Sorry, Francois, can't help you there. I must have seen zillions of cameras that day but I did not see this one. What I wrote is from my experience with my own two Holgas. I can not imagine that the heavy vignetting those cameras produce help to enhance any stereo effect. It has its charm, though. Just have a look at the galleries at www.toycamera.com.
