Subject: Quality problems with the new viewersDate: 2008-10-07 12:37:48From: DrT (George Themelis)
Hi Everyone,
I took my time to inspect the rest of my stock in these new viewers (which
has caused a delay in shipping your orders) and here is what I found:
1. (Minor) There are specs of dust (dark, noticeable) in the diffusers of
a couple of viewers.
2. A mask inside the viewer is bowing out. The opening of the viewer is
rather tight, and with this bowing it is ever tighter. Most viewers have
this issue. It is not a big problem, because the mask can be pushed back
and the plastic slide mounts will get in without a problem, but it might
be an issue for some people. One person is returning a viewer because of
this. See an example of this issue here:
http://home.att.net/~drt-3d//MFviewer-BowingMask.jpg
3. One of my viewers had a focusing problem. One lens was longer than the
other, meaning that the focusing was not assembled right. Three more
customers reported similar problems. This is easily (for me!) solved by
taking apart the viewer and putting it back properly. I do not expect the
customers to have to do this. See example of this problem here:
http://home.att.net/~drt-3d/MFViewer-TiltedLenses.jpg
4. Illumination problems: Jim Harp reported a dim viewer. I found another
viewer where half the panel is dim and the other half bright. See this
problem here:
http://home.att.net/~drt-3d/MFviewer-UnevenLight.jpg
I assume that these problems slipped through because they were in a hurry
to get my order out before they closed for a week (holiday). They are
re-opening today. I sent an email asking them to inspect the viewers more
carefully in the future. I suggested that they mark the battery polarity
in the viewers. I have also requested spare illumination panels to fix the
illumination problems (I can handle the focus problems myself but not the
illumination).
I also asked them regarding the change in eyepiece design and if they have
any parts from the first batch, per Dale's request.
I took one viewer apart and found retaining rings in the back of the
eyepieces. I was able to take these apart, to access/remove the lenses.
But this is not nearly as convenient as unscrewing the lenses from the
front. I will let you know what they say.
Thank you,
George Themelis
