Subject: Very strange TL-120 behavior

Ok folks, I've had a 3D-World TL120 since day one. I own
two of them and they've never given me a lick of trouble
until now . . .

Last night, my newest TL120 started beeping. It was sitting
in my camera bag in a corner of the room and it started
beeping at me (like a Morse code T). I didn't know the dang
thing even had a beeper in it! So, does anyone have any
idea what it's trying to tell me?

(I'm awful glad I wasn't in line at the airport when it
happened. But I'm sure I could have explained to the TSA
goons^H^H^H^H^H professionals that this big, weird-looking
thing was harmless.)

Check the batteries. Mine did that just before they were completely
drained.

I've checked the batteries. Each is reporting 1.59v which
ain't bad for a battery rated at 1.55v I'll get another set
(because they are cheap), but I don't have much confidence
that this is the problem :(

I'm hoping to shoot some this weekend. I guess I'll be taking
my Rolleidoscop as a backup :)

Maybe there's a dirty/bad electrical connection somewhere
causing the camera read a low battery voltage?

Well there's a simple answer: The TL-120 contains an alien
transponder. Whenever a UFO is in the vicinity, it picks it up and
starts transmitting its coordinates. Therefore, next time the
camera starts beeping, take a look outside, there may be a UFO over
your house.

(Of course, I could be wrong...)

That the measured voltage under load, or open circuit?

This was open circuit.
Can you suggest an appropriate load to use when testing a button
cell?

Not offhand.

I have no idea how the batteries are installed.
In some cameras, one can open where the batteries are
located such that one has one end of the battery stack
open faced.  If so, a meter set to current can be touched
from there to where the covers connect.  Then with the
unit under use (may take a third hand) the operating
current can be seen (assuming all is otherwise well).
Easier done that described I think.  Then knowing the operating
current, a resistive test load for a battery can be easily
calculated.   Better would be if the batteries could have
voltage measured "in place".  But like I said, I don't have
a TL-120 so I don't know how it does things physically.

But for your original question, just changing them out and
seeing what happens certainly is the easiest thing.  I was
just curious.  The engineer in me. :-)

Hey John, did you manage to locate or cure the problem with the
beeping? Did new batteries get rid of the beeping even though the
old ones still had good voltage?

I haven't yet had a chance to do anything with it.
The weather has been too terrible to make me want to go try
making images, so there isn't much pressure. I also have a dozen
other things keeping me busy. Maybe next week I'll do a load
test on the batteries and install some new ones.
