Subject: glue the MF plastic mounted slides shut?

Hi

Do people do this as SOP or simply leave as they are?

Have noticed people dropping my slides in the past and they tend to pop open. I don't on my own slides so I can have the option of adjusting the pairs or re-using them.

As its for a client, I'd like to idiot proof it as much as possible.

If so what do you use? Guessing model plane / kit glue would work a treat.

Cheers

I leave them as is, but I also put almost all my slides in
sleeves which prevents them from falling open.

Solvent-based adhesives near my film and lenses always gives
me the jitters (and not just from the fumes!). If I really
wanted to stick the mount halves together, I'd first try
double-stick tape.

I don't use the plastic mounts myself (for a number of reasons), but for whatever kind of mount you use, I would strongly suggest you not make it difficult or impossible to un-mount it. Using a clear plastic sleeve that covers the whole mount is a good way of keeping it closed while at the same time protecting the film from finger-prints or other damage (although I'm not sure if they make them for the plastic mounts). Taping them shut or using double sided tape would also be much better (in my opinion) than gluing them shut.

Taping can work real well, as long as the tape is not too thick, so as to cause the slide to bind or jam when put in a viewer or projector slide carrier (I use a pair of old lantern slide projectors to project my MF stereo slides).   The original method for mounting 2-D lantern slides also works for 3-D slide pairs.   Lantern slides usually had the slide film sandwiched between 2 sheets of glass.   Since the most common original lantern slide size was 3-1/4 x 4 (in some cases 3-1/4 x 4-1/4), I would also use tape to "mask down" the slide area to my 6 x 9 MF format.  The tape that I found most useful for this purpose, as it was thin, yet opaque, was metallic-coated, giving it a "silver" color.  I don't recall the brand name, but it was made specifically for mounting lantern-slides.   It had a special adhesive that held very strongly, but was formulated so as to not leach or "bleed" out when heated by the projection lamp.   Maybe someone else knows what I am talking about, and can identify it.
