I'm thinking about getting some portable storage containers done for MF3D slides; I'm thinking that I want something made of a durable material on the outside and something softer on the inside. Something that would be easily portable and still protect the slides;

two questions -

1: Is anybody else interested in something like this?

2: How many slides should it hold? The smaller 3D Treasures box looks like it holds about a dozen slides and that's not enough for me. I would want something more - but not sure how many more. If anybody else is interested I'm open to suggestions - perhaps we can get a deal on a larger order.

Post or contact off list if interested.

Thanks,

Vladimir

Always :)

The 3D treasure box is designed to hold ten un-sleeved
mounts. I suggest not trying to store more than twenty in a
box. If these are going to be used to transport slides, I
just can't see needing more than twenty at a time. If these
will be used for shelf-storage, I could see making them larger.

When you are designing, please consider the storage of
slides in protective sleeves. With the exception of my
ClickClack boxes, I don't have a reliable way to store my
sleeved slides.

Not sure what your looking for in a box, but have you checked out
LightImpressions? They have archival boxes, which would be one of my
requirements. I beleive I have the 4x5 box, that I'm currently using. It
is a little oversized on the length, and defintly over in the height, but
it makes for an easy and sturdy solution.

I should have photos of a proto-type to post by week's end.

I've decided that I'm going to make the storage container big enough for sleeved plastic holders - and for plenty of them. But I'm going to try to have a divider in the case so you can have them be snug or simply divide the case into different sections.

We'll see how it goes.  Will post pic as soon as available.

I have been using "off the shelf" 3X5 (inch) card boxes with
much satisfaction. (~ $1 each). They will hold about 30 of
the King Inn size mounts with sleeves. I just checked them
and I see that the problem is the China plastic mounts are
too wide to fit in them. One more reason to not go Chinese.

I've just uploaded 6 photos to the photos section of the prototype portable carrier/storage solution.

I think the photos are pretty self-explanatory, but if you have questions please post -

Things to note;

- made of cordura and nylon, with a plastic foam sandwiched inside; I'm not sure what this will mean in terms of chemical reaction between the slides and the foam/plastic...???... anybody with more knowledge on the subject please chime in...

- the divider is movable and you can get more dividers, so you can make little 'compartments' inside each carrier

- because the sides are soft they seem to be snug for both the plastic chinese slide holders as well as the cardboard ones, as long as you don't place them too close together

and now for the critical thing; the price: this is a prototype but it looks like these will cost about $30 with one divider, more dividers would be about $3 each...

so what do you think? ideas/comments/orders etc welcome...

I'm considering having another made with stiffer sides, i was a little miffed when I first saw how soft the sides were but they seem to work nicely for the snugness of the sides... because the foam is pretty thick (1/8" or so) I'm told that the slides would be well protected...

I would prefer something that was more rigid, as I would be concerned about the bag twisting during transport and the slides rubbing against each other and scratching the sleeves.

BTW, who are you? I didn't see a name on the post.

Thanks,

Sam

Sam;

Thanks for providing the link to album, I'm never sure how to do that...

Name's Vladimir, I don't do a lot of posting (cause I don't have much to say most of the time), but I read pretty regularly.

I agree about the rigidity, and am talking with the people who made this for me to see how it will shape up - they can insert a plastic in with the foam but that will make the whole thing bulkier... looking at other options as well.

There might not be much of a market for this, as I haven't gotten much of a response but I've got this one, and I might get one more done..

best
