Subject: Medium Format Stereo Projection?

Hi All,

I'm a Stereo Realist shooter and enjoy projection with my TDC 716, but I have a real bug in my system to buy a TL120 and get into medium format stereo. Need to save some $$$ before that will happen. I enjoy meeting with the Minnesota Stereo group in St. Paul and have been quite impressed with MF slides in a hand viewer.

I'm curious- does anyone do MF stereo projection? Does a MF stereo projector even exist? And I wonder if the huge film chips would buckle when heated in a projector? I'm eager to learn more about it!

Thanks,

Yes, I have projectors for MF slides.

One system is for separately mounted images in GePe mounts – but the glassed mounts are really expensive if you have many slides…

The second projector takes either classic 6 x 13cm slides or the Spicer card mounts (which is how I mount most of my MF slides).

Both work well, but unless you have a very large screen (ten feet high and above) there’s little advantage over projected 35mm slides unless you go right up to the screen. For a normally placed audience, the resolution provided by the 35mm slides is as much as eyes can resolve from that distance so there’s  no point in using larger film in terms of detail.

However, a medium format slide will look a little “smoother” because any gradual changes in the scene will have more film grains available for the graduation…

So, unless you have a huge screen, and the space to use it, it’s hard to justify the effort involved.

Bob,
Thanks for your reply! I'd like to hear more about your two projectors.
Are they home-built or commercial units? If commercial, what brand?
I'd be interested to hear the details such as lens focal lengths, bulb
wattages, etc. My biggest screen is 72" right now, but 10-foot sounds
like a lot of fun!
