Subject: Recent B+W slide processing results.

In the on-going search for the best non-color slides, I tried to two process houses that I know of:  Dr5 of Denver  and  Main Photo of Santa Ana.

Both were given multiple rolls of two film types of a very famous American film maker.

Both had acceptable results, with the Main Photo film returning first. Dr5 returned a week later even though they were mailed to the labs on the same day. Denver is geophysically farther but not by much.

In phone contact with both locations, one can say english wasn't a strong first language for Main Photo, but they did understand everything asked of them as was true for Dr5.

I'd hoped for a huge difference to report. Based on this limited test of a few rolls of neg film processed for slides, the small turn-around time and price were all this test found.
Based on the result, for this next big project I'll use Santa Ana. For occasions when I want sepia toned slides, Denver get the nod.

A bigger test might hold a more dramatic result.
  Stay tuned stereo fans...

I just looked at the Main Photo site and all I could see for B&W
positives was Scala. I then downloaded their full price list and only saw
Scala again. Also the price list is from 2005 with no other current
updates.

So just what film did you have for testing these two?

From my experience I have not found anyone with the knowledge, ability,
and range of film of Dr5.

The films were Plus X and T Max both rated at normal ISO for each.

Hello David,

So you just exposed these films as normal and had them develop in their
Scala chemistry with no special instructions or changes? I assume the
results were acceptable?

The rolls weren't exposed for dead center neutrality so I got some ideas of how to progress, but other projects have made all medium format stereo work of late E-6.
Just looking for other sites for B+W when the time slackens...

I sent some T-Max (TMX) to Main some time ago. I believe you have to expose it at 50 in order to avoid a push charge. It was neutral and looked good to me, but I haven't tried any others. If others here are going to try Main, you might want to post the ISO for the film you used so that the rest of us can avoid the experimental expense. This is why I've continued to use dr5 because to test films using Main's Scala machine would ultimately cost the same as sending the film straight away to dr5. BTW Duggal used to cross-process B&W films in their Scala machine, but they charged nearly the same price as dr5 at the time.
