Subject: getting full 6x6 out of Epson scanner

Hello

Just received back from the lab about 15 rolls of 120mm stereo shots and figure I'd spend the day scanning in the best before mounting and getting them to the client.

So the scanners fine, resolution etc, although I've now noticed a habit of the software auto cropping in. 54.1mm is not 60mm. Argh

Anyone use Epson Perfection 500v or similar model?

Suggestions as its halted my plans for the day.

Can't help you with the Epson question, but:
What camera are you using? 120mm film is only about 61mm wide,
my Pentax 6x7 shoots an image that is 55mm. Are you really
loosing as much as you think?

Joel.

its the auto frame aspect in the Epson Twian driver thats doing it.

I discovered the work around is turn all that off and it just scans the strip that the scan head sees when doing slides. That gives full coverage to 2x 6x6 frames.

Camera is the 3Dworld TL120

Is the film carrier masking the film at all? If so, can’t you open it up till the complete frame is visible?

What scanning software are you using? Is it auto-selecting the area to scan, or do you do that manually?

I tend to use Vuescan (www.Hamrick.com) with all my scanners and that allows very precise sizing and positioning of the bounding box, so I can squeeze every last mm out of the frame.

Doug Fisher at <http://www.betterscanning.com/> has been making
replacement film holders for various Epson and other scanners for
quite some time now. The current holders use anti-Newton glass, and
(if you're careful) you can use a file to open up the film gate a bit.

I second the recommendation for Vuescan. I've been using it for a
long time now. It is much better than the Epson software that came
with my Epson 2450, and I also like it better than the version of
Silverfast that came bundled with some hardware I bought. The
professional version (which comes with unlimited updates) is well
worth the money. Even all these years later he still provides updates
for the 2450.

thanks Bob. will give that a shot next time I do some scanning. Need to mount 80 120 slides next.

I did discover that with just a ruler as a 90 degree alignment tool I can make scans of the mounted 120's pretty easily. I'll go through the mounted slides and add some more scans afterwords now I know its possible.

The http://www.betterscanning.com/scanning/models/v500.html is the model I have. Wonder if we can convince him to make one for Realist and 120 mounted slides?
