Subject: Share / co-op of mount crop formats?

I had an old "sampler" set of different MF mount crops (portrait, landscape, pano, etc) that I used up on a few appropriate slides years ago.

It seems no one offers these sets anymore and I don't think I'd need enough to buy whole sets of each. (Not for now, anyway)

Does anyone want to part out a little of their sets if the price is worthwhile?

Would enough people here want to go into splitting up the cost of buying and splitting full sets of each kind?

(I guess I could cut and tack on homemade crops, but the pre-made mounts would look much nicer)

You're talking about 80x132 cardboard mounts with aperture
sizes other than 50x50mm ?

If so, how many of what sizes are you looking for? I
(currently) have a pretty deep inventory of a few sizes and
may be convinced to part with a few of them.

On a related note, is anyone interested in cropping masks
for 80x140mm plastic mounts? I've been thinking (for a
couple of years) about having some 40x50, or 52x40 or ...
opaque mylar masks cut to fit inside the 3D World mounts.
The idea being that I would mount my full-sized film chips
in the 80x140 mounts and then float an appropriate mask over
the top of it when I wanted to crop the image.

I obviously haven't gotten far on the project, but don't
know if anyone else is interested.

Floating masks...I was entertaining that very same idea too! I was thinking of just schleping dark, unexposed film ends for it.

Def. interested in some of your various aperture mounts in the meanwhile.

But the questions remain:
how many of what sizes are you looking for?

Are we talking quantities of 2, 20, 200 or 2,000?

i just PMed you a while back :-)I'm thinking about 20 or so of each kind.

I'm experimenting with two Horizon 202s, but not yet convinced that I'm going to really get much out of it to mount. But I have a few already that are sponge, er, "mount worthy" ;-)

The portrait vertical crops would be very useful for figures and close ups and seem the most practical to have all around. It'd probably be worth getting a whole 50 pk eventually.

I never thought much about the 40mm aperture landscape formats, but will probably foresee needing a few of those too.

I always preferred the square format (even in paintings, where it's now quite trendy). I always compose for the full square, but things don't always come out the way intended!

Speaking of square composure...those crop/guide lines in the TL-120 viewfinder: are they the FULL film area, or just the recommended guides for when mounting later? It seems the people and groups I shot always look smaller on the film that I remember composing them for in the finder.

John,

I would be interested in the floating masks although the numbers would be smallish.  Maybe a few dozen each of a couple of different formats.

I once had a set of masks made for my old 35mm stereo cardboard mounts.  They were made from a sheet of what I think was polypropylene (in black) and cut on a laser cutting device.  I was able to have three different sizes cut on the one sheet and I think I ended up with over a hundred masks.  They were a little thick once mounted in the cardboard mount but they were very good.  The edges of the apertures were beautifully sharp and very accurate.  The cutting device was able to have any shape programmed into it but I stuck with the normal rectangle in a few different panorama type sizes - 21mm, 18mm and 15mm tall I think were the sizes.  The only other thing I did was to have a slight curve on the corners.  I  had thought recently about doing it for the medium format mounts but it would be expensive in small numbers.  I remember at the time I had the smaller masks done, it was only affordable because the laser cutter was owned by a friend of a friend, and he did it for a few dollars and a nice bottle of red!  Sadly he has moved on and I have lost touch with him.

Keep me posted on whatever you end up trying.  I'm definitely interested.

regards,

Harry Calderbank

If masks could be competitively priced compared to buying a bunch of custom mount apertures, than it would be a good thing! ;-)
