What are people using to attach film chips to cardboard mounts?

I use some of the silver mylar tape I got from either Rocky Mountain
Memories, or Calumet. It's pretty frustrating that I'm getting
reports back from the folio that my film is slipping in the mounts.

I use the 1/4" gold-tape from RMM3D.
I find it is holding much better than the silver tape did.

My spool is getting low, however. I know I bought a spare
back before RMM3D kinda disappeared, but I'll be darned if I
know where it has gone. I don't know what I'm going to use
when this is gone.

Hello Brian,

> What are people using to attach film chips to cardboard mounts?

I have been using silver mylar tape since the beginning of by film days
for both 35mm and MF. None of them have shown any signs of drying,
bleeding, peeling, or slipping. This is with Spicer 35mm cardboard mount,
RMM MF white and black cardboard mounts, and 3DWorld MF plastic mounts.

There were several manufacturers and some had different thickness. I
really did not like the thicker tape. I settled on the tape from a
company called Delta1. You can still get this from B&H in 1/4" ($13.50),
3/8" ($14.50), or 1/2" ($18.50) widths by 72 yards.

1/4" - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/271586-

3/8" - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/271587-
REG/Delta_1_30620_Mylar_Tape_3_8_.html

1/2" - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/271588-

Hope that helps,

Hello George,

> Also, from DrT :)

All my stock is years old. I assume you are getting new stock. Is it
still the thin mylar base or has Delta 1 changed to a thicker mylar base?

PS - I always prefer to buy from a stereo vendor (like Dr. T.) that we
all know over a corporate giant (like B&H) whenever possible.

Thanks,

Thank you DrDave!

Yes, I am getting new stock but I am not checking it out since I am still using tape I’ve had from a few years ago, so I don’t know if they have changed or not.

I'm working on my second roll of 1/8" gold mylar tape from
Rocky Mountain Memories. I like it _way_ better than the
1/4" silver stuff I got from 'im earlier.

I think I have another year's worth of tape on the roll (at
my current rate). After that, I'm not sure what I'll do.
Maybe I'll just shift to using 3M Magic Tape.

Anyone wanna suggest their favorite replacement product?

There are at least two different types of silver mylar tape. The main
difference being thickness. I do not like the thicker tape, but the
thinner one is just the same as the gold you are using.

The brand I use is Delta 1. On the label it has the following
information:

CPM, Inc.
Dallas, TX 75238-1337
Product #30610
IPC code 37886 30610

You can get it from George Themelis or B&H. It comes in 1/4 and 3/8"
widths and 72 yard length

Hope that helps,

I just picked up a roll of 3M 850 Polyester Silver Film Tape (1/4" x
72 Yards) from Calumet Photo. I have some really old silver tape from
RMM (I think) that has been failing (recently mounted slides coming
loose in the folio) that this tape is going to replace. I haven't
mounting anything yet, so I don't know if I like it.

You might want to look into 3M #850 tape:

 http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com/1-4-poly-film-tape-850-silver/archival-adhesive-tapes/

The key here is the word "archival".    The adhesive in some tapes, such as 3M Magic Tape will in time dry out.    The three main parameters in slide mounting tape are thinness, strength, and permanent (archival) adhesive that does not dry out or bleed from under the tape in time.  You might want to contact each of the major tape manufacturers for their recommendations.

People have been having problems with Light Impressions (whom I used
to use) recently. Their price for that tape is higher than even Calumet.

In my experience, dealing with folks in the Fine Art photography
world, "archival" with regards to mounting materials (tapes, etc.)
means just the opposite of what you state. When mounting photographic
material (prints or film) you want something that is secure, but not
permanent. That way if something happens to the mounted photograph it
can be removed from the mount without damage to the photograph. It
also means that the mounting material won't leave a residue, or react
with the photographic material.
