This is the Alan Lewis "Magniview Orthostereoscopic Stereoscope" referenced below,  which interestingly works for MF slides as well as Holmes prints. -Linda

I've seen some high-end internally lit Holmes card viewers on the internet, but don't have any idea how they would stack up to a slide viewer.

Have you seen this one?
http://www.seriousviewers.com/products/products1.htm

There was another ultimate Holmes format card viewer on the market briefly ten(?) years ago, lighted with very short FL achromats.  Anyone remember the name of that (unsuccessful at googling for it using the more general terms "stereoscope modern new ultimate etc.").

Like with everything else that is "ultimate" in 3d, it is either very expensive and/or not being made anymore and very hard to find for sale.

I agree with John, though, a MirScope or aerial photogrammetry (?) stereoscope would be ideal with large wet process prints, if your aim is to reproduce MF quality imagery.

I believe Boris is thinking of John Dukes' Opticard. I put some information
(from when I sold my unit, I do not have one for sale) here:

http://www.sell-3d.com/2012-10/DukesOpticard.htm

I did a google search for Opticard Stereoscope and the first link is just a
copy of my auction description above. Nothing else seems to be coming up.

Some time ago, a friend of mine told me that he recalled seeing a "stereoscope kit" advertised in a magazine around the late 1950's or early 1960's.   He said that he remembered the ad, because, rather than a photograph, it had a line drawing of it, apparently to give the connotation of an antique Holmes type stereo card viewer, which it apparently resembled.  The concept was pre-cut wood pieces that you would assemble yourself.   I am sure that the lenses were not achromats, since even for that era, the price was just $15 USD.   Just curious, does anyone recall this (or possibly have one)?

George your post is a Godsend! Thanks for the great web page - thank Dr. T for the historical record!

Amazing that google did not pick it up in their archive. I must have looked a _thousands_ of (image) hits in my search. Never saw it.

I got to look through one of these at an NSA meeting years ago. THIS is the stereoscope needed for wet process contact prints off of _sharp_ negatives!

Are you looking for one of those specifically or just a stereocope kit?
The reason I ask is because they are still around such as this one from
3DStereo for $64.95:

http://www.3dstereo.com/viewmaster/vn-holm.html

Or buy from her Amazon store for only $59.95:

http://www.amazon.com/Holmes-Stereoscope-Viewer-Stereocards-stereoviews/dp
/B0035ZGMTU

Here is one for $39.95 from an Etsy dealer:

Hope that helps,

No, I was not looking for one.   I was interested in the advertisement, as well as the historical data, like the year and publications that it appeared in, and any printed information like instruction sheets and reviews and user reports from that time.
