Hi Guys,

The recent discussion on Stereoscopes made me look for my Alan Lewis'
viewers. I found them and put them for sale in ebay. Each auction starts
at $0.01 and has no reserve:

MagniView Achromatic Ortho Stereoscope By Alan Lewis

I bought this 10 years ago from Jon Golden (3D Concept). I might have used
it for 10 minutes, that's all. I then put it away. This is an interesting
stereoscope. It has interocular adjustment! And comes with two lens panels,
one 140mm FL (shorter than standard Holmes viewers) and one with 85mm FL
lenses (very short!) which are suitable for transparencies too (or small
size stereoviews).

Please look at the pictures and description. Unlike some other products, I
see a weak point on how the lenses are held in place. There is a set screw
for one panel. The left lens fell out. I tightened the screw but you might
considering gluing the lens in place. The lenses in the short FL panel are
only held by hot glue. Well, again, one lens fell out. I recommend using
more glue. Other than that, everything looks fine.

DiamondView Achromatic Stereoscope By Alan Lewis w/custom case

I bought this 10 years ago directly from Alan Lewis. Unlike the units sold
via 3d Concepts, my viewer comes with a custom wooden case which carries the
serial number no. 1! I don't think I ever took this out of its case. I put
it away for 10 years and now it is time to sell it (since I don't work with
stereoviews anyway).

I hope that these fine viewers find a good home :)

George, you had me lol'ing :) My view is that "short"
doesn't start until the focal length is smaller than 70mm
and that 85mm lands firmly in the "normal" range.

That's the great thing about qualitative labels. They mean
so many things to so many people :)

Yes, short for a pair of lenses found on a stereoscope! After all, this is
a stereoscope, intended to view stereo prints :)

Seen, yesterday, on MF 3D:

A description of the Lewis stereoscope.... "and one with 85mm fl
lenses(very short) which are suitable for transparencies or (small size
stereo views)".

John Thurston wrote: "my view is that "short doesn't start until the fl

The retort from the original email writer was: "After all this is a
stereoscope intended to view stereo prints".

I disagree with the retort, but do agree with John T, as the original
description did say, "...suitable for transparencies or (small size
stereo views)". Small size stereo views are usually shot with the 127
Rolleidoscope type stereo cameras, the resulting image size being about
45mm x 45mm, (an approximately, 1 5/8" square image). Suggesting a
viewer lens fl of less than 70mm is appropriate. I do have a bunch of
small B & W stereo views, (prints), of Germany, made prior to WW II,
which do appear rather smallish in the Lewis Stereoscope, when using the
85mm fl lenses.

The best,

DON.

Am I correct that longer FL viewer lenses realtive to the camera lens FL increases the perception of depth? And the reverse is more immersive?
Thanks,
