David Lee passed away a few days ago, I am told.
This is a terrible loss to the MF3d community.  We've lost a great artist, the standard-bearer for supreme image quality and artistic vision in our medium, not to mention a friend and fellow traveller on our rocky road of MF3d photography.
I'd like to see David Lee's contribution honored some way.  How can we go about doing that?
Sadly,
Boris

Indeed David Lee's passing is a great loss to the community.

And a correction: the NSA Facebook postings indicate that David had ALS (not MS). The memorial service will be 2/28 in Aptos CA. -Linda N

I'm very sorry to hear this. He was a very nice man and an excellent photographer.

I think it would honor him if someone could put together a retrospective online of his MF images. I'm not even sure they have been digitized, but I remember them and they were stunning.

I have a small collection of his stereoview prints.
Many of David's stunning images are on his website, including cross and parallel viewing options:

You must be new Timo :)

David was well known in the stereoscopic circles and a regular attendee at
NSA Conventions. He had a table selling his stereoviews at NSA. I bought
stereoviews from him there. His specialty was Medium Format hyperstereos in
B&W stereoviews, but occasionally he would shoot with a Stereo Realist or
other 35mm stereo cameras. He enjoyed taking candid pictures of people.

At some point he ran a "sale by subscription" program where every month you
received a stereoview in the mail. If you liked the stereoview, you kept it
and paid a certain amount (around $20-$25?) If not, you just returned it. I
joined this program and obtained a small collection of (mostly if not all
B&W) stereoviews, all numbered and signed by David. I later (last year) sold
them in ebay. I just checked my files and saw that I sold 25 stereoviews by
David taken between 1993 and 2001.

He also developed a stereoscope he called Hyperviewer, essentially a large
mirror stereoscope intended to be held by hands from the sides to view large
format prints. This was sold through Berezin but he also sold it himself at
NSA conventions (I bought one from him, I think at the 2008 NSA Convention
in Grand Rapids MI).

I had not seen David in the last few NSA Conventions but I would see his
regular postings in Facebook. He posted stereo pairs at the NSA facebook
page until very recently. I had no idea that he was ill so I was shocked to
hear the news.

Michele passed this along to me (thanks for the research!).  That's a good start towards honoring David's achievement and contribution to the state of the art.  The wiki page could certainly use some expansion:

from this wiki page I went to his official website which has very nice galleries.  I forgot this site existed (I think I saw it once).  I guess at the very least we should make sure that his website remains up and running, in the unlikely event that his family were to forget it.

Although I did not know David very well, his photography was and is still a great inspiration to me.  I'd like to make sure it remains accessible to all.

Boris

I'm very sad to hear of David Lee's passing.   He was a great artist and a true craftsman.    Whenever I would receive one the medium format folios that he participated in I knew that I would have to set aside a few minutes just to take in each of the images he submitted.   I was lucky enough to have attended a talk he gave on MF photography at some NSA convention (Buffalo?), I vividly remember him describing the laborious process of finding lenses that matched closely enough for use in his twin camera rigs.

Although many people have seen his wonderful stereo cards I'm not sure his medium format slides have been as widely viewed.   A great way to honor David would be to have some of his MF slides and viewers on display at the next NSA convention.   I don't have access to any of David's slides, but I would be happy to provide a 3D World viewer or two to make this possible.

David was a great photographer, and a wonderful person willing to help
out when I started in MF3D. I have many of his stereocards from his
subscription service. I always looked forward to receiving his next
card. I had no idea he was ill. I am very sorry that he is no longer
with us.

David was also a long time member of the MF3D Folio II. He
volunteered several times to take the folio to the NSA convention so
that others could see a MF3D folio.

Several of David's slides are in the current loop of the folio. With
his family's permission I'd be willing to allow his slides to continue
in the folio (and to fill the empty slots if they desire to add more)
so that they could be at the convention this year (assuming, as
always, I find a volunteer to take the folio).

On a practical note, David had the folio when he passed away. If
anyone knows who I should contact in order to retrieve it please send
a private message to me at the email address below.

There is a nice stereo image of David with a twin rig on tripod about halfway through the "guest" photos (by Bruce Clemens) on David's website. Also, I couldn't help but notice an unusual image in about the middle of David's Yosemite/Sierra set with a ghost figure in front of a crevice in a rock wall. Is this David? -Linda N

I was very sad to hear of David Lee's passing.  He was a great insipration to me with his hyperstereo's and a very kind man.  I recently visited San Fracsisco.  He drove an hour to visit with me and take me around the city.  I was shocked to see him in such a weakened state.  I was touched that he came p to the city to meet with me in spite of his condition.  We had a fine day and I shot some nice hypersteroes of the golden gate and the city.  I mailed him one which he got to see.  I will miss him.'a great man taken too soon
