Subject: Currently available viewers

Hi all,

I'm new to the group, and new to MF3D. I'm really glad to have discovered this group! I've spent the past month going through the archives and reading everything I can, and I'm ready to take the dive. I've ordered a Sputnik, some lens hoods and a bunch of flocking paper. If the experience of MF3D is as immersive and astonishing as it's been described here, I think I'm in for a treat.

My current question is about viewers. I've tried to collect as much info as I can, but it's hard as there are a lot of dead links that even archive.org/web/ can't access. It seems like my current options are:

1. $10 Folding cheap viewer available from berezin.com and 3dstereo.com

2. $20 Holga 120 3D Viewer available from many places, including B&H

I've read over and over that the mounts aren't worth the plastic they're made of, but is the viewer acceptable? Maybe similar to the Uni-colour 2Q viewer?

3. $90 Uni-colour 2Q viewer (aka MFPV) available from 3dstereo.com

Lots of info on this one (thanks John). Doesn't seem like it's worth $90.

4. $750 Heydascope from Larry Heyda's site

I'd love to get this, but it's a bit out of my price range for a first viewer.

5. Build my own. This option appeals to me quite a bit, and I've found a fair number of plans/designs (mostly from Robert Thorpe's page). Larry, do you still have a pair of lenses you used in your viewer and were offering to sell in a post back in April?

What are your thoughts on the above options? Have I overlooked anything?

Also, is there a supplier of slide mounts? It seems like Rocky Mountain Memories isn't operating any more. Are the newest 3D World mounts available new anywhere? I'm quite interested in the recent post about using a 3d printer to print your own mounts and am interested to hear how they work.

Thanks for all the incredible information here. I hope to be a contributing member of the group.

Hi Ian,

There is a Heydascope with fixed focus that has the same huge achromats that are in the adjustable viewer. It is called the Heydascope Scholar. It is incredibly immersive and an optional lighted back can be purchased separately. The viewer is $300. Please let me know if you would like one. I make them up to order.

Welcome to astounding 3D!

Make sure you run a test roll through your new Spud. There are many possible flaws which may need addressing. Light leaks, mismatched focus, mismatched shutter speeds, etc. Also look for bright light subjects so you can keep your apertures small. The Sputnik's lenses are not usually the best, but most make quite sharp images with a small aperture.

You will need something a lot better.

This the STL viewer that was made by 3D World, who also made a backlit focusing version as well as the TL120 camera. It has excellent lenses but is a fixed focus, which means if you wear glasses, you will need to use the glasses while viewing the slides. I have extracted the lenses from one of these viewers to make a focusing viewer for a 1080p cell phone (like a home made Viewvaster).

4. $750 Heydascope from Larry Heyda's site

I'd love to get this, but it's a bit out of my price range for a first viewer.

This is your best bet if you can't afford one of Larry's excellent viewers. I have a pair of his lenses which I bought recently, and they are superb. I also built a viewer based on very high quality German lenses that I stumbled on from ebay, but such luck is rare.

What are your thoughts on the above options? Have I overlooked anything?

Choice of film stock. Choice of lab for processing. See http://www.filmferrania.it/labs

Also, is there a supplier of slide mounts? It seems like Rocky Mountain Memories isn't operating any more. Are the newest 3D World mounts available new anywhere? I'm quite interested in the recent post about using a 3d printer to print your own mounts and am interested to hear how they work.

Stereo 3D used to have some cardboard mounts still but now they only list the portrait mounts for sale. http://www.3dstereo.com/viewmaster/cmf-4x5p.html

Dear Bob, I am in the same postition as you, and I want to see the amazing 3d of Medium Format.

I wondered how you had got on with your quest, particularly for a viewer (and lenses) and for mounting frames for MF?

Best wished,

Hi Oliver,

Maybe we're not in exactly the same position — I do have some various ways to view medium format slides. I own several different viewers. One is a wonderful Sam Smith Regal Viewer, though that one does not accept the 3D World plastic mounts — the channel for the slides is not wide enough. I also have a viewer made for me by Don Lopp — I think Mike Davis once labelled a similar viewer of Don's the “Crust-o-Matic.” By the name you might guess that it’s not much to look at. But looking through it is another thing entirely! What it lacks in form it overachieves in function. Looking through it is a super-immersive experience. I also have some viewers from 3D World.

When I wrote last year I was writing on behalf of a friend who had begun shooting MF3D with a pair of Rolleis, and then later on with a Sputnik. Since the end of the 3D World line there had not been an available MF3D viewer until Larry Heyda come out with his. I never did see the follow up from Larry where the fixed-focus viewers were posted on his website. I have seen Larry’s premium, focusing viewer and it is very nice. I haven’t yet had the chance to see one of his fixed focus viewers but I hope to.

How about you, Oliver? Do you shoot medium format 3D? Have you had the chance to view it? It is certainly the best medium I’ve seen for viewing 3D stills. The size is pretty much perfect for the film to be centered at normal eye spacing. You are looking at the original film, and when it’s professional, high grade film, well lit, through good lenses, there’s nothing to compare to it. In my opinion. :^)

I belong to three MF3D folios. Soon two of those folios will be merged. These folios only circulate in the U.S. and Canada, though one was recently carried to the ISU Convention in Korea. There is also an International folio though I don’t know who is in it or where it circulates. Perhaps someone on this list would know if it might be coming soon to a town near Oliver?

best regards,
Bob Venezia

I am to lazy to get too deep into viewers in part because of the work involved in mounting.

So I remain with an early 20th century French  9 x 13 wooden viewer intended for glass slides. Mine has the wider lenses that are great for viewing.

I assume that glass slides were shot and used without mounting.  In any case I just cut the film with the two stereo images together like this Berlin & Chartres collection on flicker, and it worksl,

There is not much separation between the two images, but it seems to work fine with the viewer, which also does not have much separation.

"I assume that glass slides were shot and used without mounting."

If that were the case all of your glass slides would be pseudo-scopic, since left and right are reversed on a glass plate or film when it comes out of a stereo camera.   This is due to the way lenses work- the image registers upside-down on the taking medium.

This also explains why it's not uncommon to see pseudo vintage stereo cards.

I assume it was a typo in the first email - it should be 6 x 13 cm not 9 x 13. This is one of the two standard sizes for glass slides, and unlike the other (45 x 107 mm) it has no (or minimal) separation between the images.

To make the positive, the left and right negative images were swapped in an inverter. This:

http://www.ebay.fr/sch/i.html?_odkw=&cmd=Blend%7CBlend&_sop=10&_src=hmpg&_osacat=4692&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR6.TRC0.A0.H1.Xinverseur.TRS0&_nkw=inverseur&_sacat=4692

would be a complex version of such a device - for home use, a simple L-R sliding version using an external light and timer was more common.

So assuming that the Heidoscop puts the two images next to each other on the film, jinglis's idea of just showing them directly won't work. Which is why, I suppose, the images in the flickr file are all pseudo!

Just to expand on my previous post, this most certainly does not work.

I looked at your second flickr album, and every single one of the images is pseudo - the left and right images are reversed.   This is what I would expect for film taken right out of a Heidoscop.

Like many people I can only free-view cross-eyed, so I was able to freeview all of the images.   They are lovely 3D images when viewed in this fashion.   I would not want to see them in a viewer unless you properly mount them - the far points would appear to be close and vice-versa.

Yes 6x13

I have never seen stereo in my life because my eyes do cannot focus on the same object, so this is better than I have ever seen and I just see it without noticing an issue.

So I am reversing something?

So should I substitute the images with the right on the left and the left on the right?

I can just cut the film and do that without mounting in my ever lazy way to obtain stereo.

That is the way that the film often comes from DM in Germany after developing at the 2-3 Euro fee. I now bring my film from the US to Europe to develop, since I head to Germany each summer each year.

Yes. If you are working from an uncut roll of film, snip the
film apart at the septum and swap the left and the right frames.

If you are working with cut-film, but the frames back in
sequence by the numbers on the edge of the film. Then you can
reliably swap the left and right frames.

For reference, I have documented the "quick and dirty"
mounting method I learned from Paul Talbot.
http://stereo.thurstons.us/content/?p=404

It consists of swapping the left and right halves and
sliding them into a clear plastic sleeve. The sleeve is now
ready to drop into an appropriate viewer. If I like the
results, I'll mount the image and put the final slide in the
same sleeve. If I don't like the image, I usually just leave
the halves in the sleeve and move on to the next image.

Hi Oliver, perhaps you were referring to me -- I believe we are in the same boat in terms of looking for a viewer.

I have purchased some lenses from Larry Heyda which are on their way now. I was hoping to get ahold of a steal-the-light 3d world viewer, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to.

In the interim, I've taken to scanning my sputnik slides and viewing them as anaglyphs on the computer. I also have been working on modifying my sputnik, but I've hit a bit of a hitch and messed up the shutter. Hopefully my MF3D journey doesn't end before I've even seen a "true" MF3D stereo pair. Once I get set up I hope to join a folio.

All the best in your medium format 3d journey Oliver!

Hi Ian, Yes you are right I was thinking of you. My journey seems to have been blocked by the lack of MF mounts. If I can get that sorted I may get a Sputnik but use it to take the left picture with the right and the right with the left so I do not have to align them to view slides!  I am thinking of making a viewer like the one on the Australian Stereoscopic site The Victorian 3D Society, Inc: AUSTRALIA

I wouldhowever like to see a MF slide in a suitable viewer to see if all this is worth it......

As fate would have it, the molds gave out after only a few Regal viewers were completed. I did manage to salvage one more and went the next level with a dual format version. If there is anyone out there that has the Regal viewer, I can post images of how I converted it to accept both cardboard and plastic mounts.

I've begun making the white medium format viewers again with the big 50mm dia lenses (75mm FL). I have a big order right now that will take me until mid September, but I can make more after that. It's a fixed focus viewer with incredible immersion.

Larry;

Do you have any pricing info on these? When 'after September' do you think these would be available? And how would one put in an order if I wanted to do it?

Sorry to butt into the conversation, but I'm always looking for new MF3D viewers... (despite owning too many already ;-)

best

Vlad

I've begun making the white medium format viewers again with the big 50mm dia lenses (75mm FL). I have a big order right now that will take me until mid September, but I can make more after that. It's a fixed focus viewer with incredible immersion.

Kind regards,

Hi Vlad,

I don't like to give prices on the forum, but I will be putting this viewer on my website very soon with all the information. At present, my website only features the adjustable viewer, which uses the same lenses as the fixed focus one. Please see:

You'll find ordering information there. They will be available by October 1st. I have had a number of reorders from people who have bought this viewer in the past.

    Hi John,

    THANK YOU!

My computer recently died, along with the hard drive, so all my pictures of that viewer were lost. I'll take new ones as soon as I finish my new order. The only thing I have left is this low rez photo...

    Kind regards,

    Larry

    Hello friends,

I am the photographer that put in the order with Larry for more viewers. I worked with Larry on initial design and this is my second large order. Like other members of this group, I've been concerned with finding quality viewers for medium format transparencies. In addition, I needed a reliable source for several viewers at a time. These are very good viewers, and Larry is a talented and reliable person to work with. 35mm format stereo is much easier, but I love working with medium format stereoscopic film on some projects, and without Larry I don't think I'd be able to.

    Dear Peter,

Thank you for your kind comments to the group. Just to let you know, your 15 viewers are coming along nicely. Already 11 are cast and awaiting assembly. The 12th is in the mold and I'll be taking it out within the hour. All new molds were made, along with improvements to the way it fits together. The lenses are being made by a very experienced optical firm in China and should arrive soon.

Thank you again for your support.

    Kind regards,

    Larry

    Hi Larry,
My pleasure... It's a messt world and all we can do is try and be supportive of each other.

Thanks for the update..I'm busy painting 4 viewers for a museum that is due this week.
The order you're working on is for my solo show opening next month, and I'm assuming I'll need to prep them the same way I do now.
What I do is I take the diffuser panel off, remove the lenses, and seal the lens openings and slot to protect against any paint getting on the black finish inside the viewer.
Then I paint the outside of the viewer so it has an even, flat white finish.

I'm only telling you this so you'll know my final steps to prep the viewers... If there are any changes on your end that I should prepare for, just let me know. I won't have any margin for doing something in addition to my usual prep....Assuming that I get the viewers by the time we agreed, I should be able to get 'em done on time.

Thanks again Larry... I appreciate you.  How the grandson doing?

    Best,
    Peter
