Good news! My custom die to produce 50mm x 50mm mounts has arrived, and is functioning well. I hope to be able to produce a high quality product at a reasonable cost. My goal is to give something back to this great community which has helped me discover the most incredible photographic process I've ever seen.

The mounts are nearly exact replicas of the square cardboard mounts previously sold by Rocky Mountain Memories (RMM). The apertures are 50mm x 50mm spaced 62mm apart. The overall dimension of the folded mount is 132mm x 80mm.

My prices are as follows:

$0.60 USD for one “heavy” weight cardstock (110lbs) mount. This weight is quite similar to the original RMM mounts.

$0.55 USD for one “medium” weight cardstock (65lbs) mount.

The price does not include shipping. Shipping to Canada or the United States will be a flat rate of $8.00. If you live elsewhere, contact me and we'll work something out.

The paper is black and is advertised as acid and lignin free. The mounts will be shipped unfolded (i.e. you will have to fold them).

Send me a private message with your mailing address and I will send you a sample mount of each paper weight. I'm withdrawing this offer if/when I spend $50 on shipping, so this offer is first come first serve.

If you want to order some mounts, you can order on my site here. The checkout uses PayPal.

Take care, and keep shooting!

Ian Andvaag

Further information:

Adjusted for inflation, RMM sold their mounts for about $0.37 each back in 2004. I regret that mine are more expensive, but I've run the numbers many times and this is what I've come up with. I've seen a few packages of the old RMM stock go on ebay recently for about a dollar apiece, so at least I can do better than that. Know that this is not a money making scheme on my end, I'm truly providing the best possible price I can.

Also know that this is the first time I've sold anything, so please be patient. I will try to get orders out as quickly as possible, but I don't know what kind of response to anticipate.

I just ordered 5 of the 10-pac heavy mounts. No need to send samples of the lighter ones I don't think!

Thank you for pursuing this Ian! This could be a significant
boost to our resources in our little art niche.

Thanks for your support, Geoffrey. I dropped your mounts at the post office today. The folded mount is "medium weight", the other 51 are the heavy weight mounts.

Take care,
Ian

Just wanted to let Ian know I got my mounts, thank you!

And to everyone else - I can highly recommend these.  They are indeed almost identical to the RMM mounts from 'years' ago - size and feel is almost identical, the fact that they are black is a great bonus for me - I prefer that to the white RMM mounts.

I think the 'weight of the stock', (the thickness of the paper), is a little thinner than the RMMs, but not enough to make a difference - I did get a 'medium' weight stock, slightly thinner one as a sample from Ian, I'm not sure I would recommend those, TO ME it seems too thin, but perhaps someone else might like these.

I just mounted about 3 sets of MF slides in the 'regular' stock ones and am very happy with them, easy to work with, takes tape very well, folds well (I put the folded mounts under some weight for 24 hours before mounting, but that's just me)... all good!

Thanks again Ian, hopefully I'll be buying more - now I need to get out there and shoot some more!

best

Vlad

Ian!

Here's my take on the mounts.

Ode to Ian's MF Mounts

I just received my mounts as well
And can confirm they're really swell
They fold with ease---are sure to please
Block out stray light....a true delight
I chose the thicker stock
...It's strong!
So order Ian's mounts---
You can't go wrong!

Geoff

All we need now is a new STL viewer. Thankfully they've not stopped making 120mm slide film.

Don't forget that Lawrence Heyda has two excellent viewers available: a top-of-the-line focusing, lit viewer (the Heydascope) as well as a more inexpensive fixed focus, STL viewer (the Heydascope Scholar). I think the Scholar is also available with optional light panel.

I agree that slide film seems to be in a very precarious postition. I bought 50 rolls of 120 to shoot over the next year or so and decided to send an email to Fuji thanking them for making slide film. I received an email back saying that my message had been received and would top the list of positive comments passed on to senior management for this month. I have no illusions that I made any difference, but it's all that I can do. Keep shooting, processing, mounting and viewing Fuji's incredible slide films before they go away!
