Great! Look forward to seeing you there. Not sure what I'll be able to bring with me in terms of MF stuff - I'm Eclipse watching after the Congress, which means I'll want to bring appropriate optics/cameras for that. And they can be bulky...

It's actually an NSA Convention combined with an ISU Congress so there will be people from all over the world and 3D in all its forms...

Yes. The last ISU Congress was in Busan, Korea from 6th - 11th September 2015. The intention was to show the Promo at the Congress.

Obviously, it was only uploaded on the day before the Congress ended - California time. But that is something like 16 hours behind Korea time, so on the morning of the Congress's final day... Sadly, I think there might have been some technical issues since the show was so late in becoming available and it wasn't actually projected...

Well, these conventions do require a  lot of advance planning. The promo for Irvine 2017 was shown at NSA 2016, but as Bob says, was apparently a little too late for the last ISU congress in 2015.

I plan to attend Irvine, and told Steve Berezin that I would be willing to coordinate the MF SIG meeting (special interest group). Who else will be there? Will anyone be able to bring MF gear and hopefully folios(s)? Cameras/viewers etc? I am not sure if anyone is planning a workshop or other MF gatherings. I will be flying but can at least bring a couple of MF lighted focusing viewers (3D World) and some of my own MF views. Linda N

I'll be there too....

My activities are not related to MF 3d but I am involved in other areas of
3d photography that you might find interesting... Most likely I will be
flying so I am not carrying much (the next convention is in my hometown,
Cleveland Ohio, so I will have lots of stuff there). If you need anything
from me, just let me know.

I plan to present 3-4 workshops:
- Stereo Composition
- Use of Flash in Stereo
- Using different lenses for stereo
- Hyper/Hypo stereo photography

This list pretty much summarizes my current interests in stereo. It will be
fun to see some old friends there and make some new ones :)

Yes. I will be at the ISU/NSA in Irvine, and I'm hoping to get to the MF3D SIG meeting. But, as Secretary of the International Stereoscopic Union I will have at least three business meetings to attend and I have no idea yet what is going to clash...

I'm flying from the UK and I will have additional equipment for viewing and recording the Solar Eclipse that will be visible across the USA a week after the Congress. At this stage I simply cannot promise to be able to bring any MF equipment (though I might bring a few slides... :) )

Bob, two questions for you :)

1. Do you look like John Oliver, the British guy who hosts the show “Last Week Tonight”?
http://www.hbo.com/last-week-tonight-with-john-oliver
I think we have met once and I think you look just like him, maybe my memory is wrong.

2. Where are you planning to watch the eclipse? I would like to watch it too, most likely somewhere in KY, TN. What kind of 3d photography do you plan to do, if any?

Surprisingly, a solar eclipse offers an opportunity for some unusual stereo photography.  Most people look at eclipses through dark filters, which is dangerous, because a tiny pinhole can result in blindness.

Much safer, and I think more interesting, is to look the other direction (no filter needed).  If you look at the shadows of a leafy tree during an eclipse, you will see that the thousands of "apertures" formed by the spaces between the leaves have changed shape into crescents.

Now, if those leaf-shadows happen to be cast onto a solid three dimensional object, like a pillar, they will wrap around it.  A stone statue can create even more interesting shapes.

Maybe we should discuss this in photo-3d.

An experienced astrophotographer who has photographed many eclipses, thinks that a standard (full frame) 300mm lens is about right. Anything longer than that will be too long to get the corona, etc. into the picture.

Looking at an eclipse with properly used solar filters is not
dangerous. I would recommend Sky & Telescope
<http://www.skyandtelescope.com/> or Astronomy
<http://www.astronomy.com/> magazines for information on safe eclipse
viewing, and suppliers for solar filters.

No filter is absolutely safe.  The only safe way to view an eclipse is indirectly, as by viewing the image created on a matte surface as projected through a pinhole onto a black card.

I've used a number 10 arc welding plate for unmagnified
views of solar eclipses. Welders use such filters for years and
years without apparent injury. These days, auto-darkening
plates are popular, and they rely on LCD technology to filter
out harmful infrared and ultraviolet radiation. FWIW.

The best place to locate a filter is in front of the main light gathering element...not after the eyepiece for example. I recall a Sears refractor that had has a kid that included a filter at the eyepiece. I shudder to think what would have happened had it fractured from the considerable heat focused from the main objective. Far better to place an appropriate filter in front of the primary aperture so the excess light never entered the scope in the first place.
The scope also included a right angle eyepiece adapter to project the Sun's disk on a white screen. I also had the bright idea to project the image on a wall...imagine my delight when I could observe the granular structures at the surface of the photosphere!
