I'm not familiar with all the scanner models - can't even remember which one I have!

But my advice would be to spend your money on Vuescan rather than a new scanner...

any recommendations? I know there's two more recent models that are close in price to each other but is it worth the extra?

I'm just in the middle of doing some now and I'm having to demount the slides and use the sheet/strip holder. Otherwise the scanner seems to decide to cut the images up (I shoot in dark places about 1/2 the time)

I also highly recommend Vuescan software.  I think there is a trial version (watermarked?) so that you can see if it does what you need. It works great with my Nikon film scanner. Unfortunately I have the 35mm version not the mf version. But the software is very good with "odd" formats such as Realist and Nimslo, and older equipment that may not be supported under newer operating systems ( i.e. No updated drivers from manufacturer).  I suspect that Vuescan would improve your experience with your current scanner(Which is ??? ) and might be advantageous even if you do upgrade your hardware. If you don't mind me chiming in: On my Epson V700 I only use the Epson software since there's no way to scan separate "windows" in Vuescan like there is in Epson. This comes in REAL handy when you're making your own film holders because (shock!) there are no stereo mount film holders...
(And Vuescan does weird things with my Konica Minolta Dimagescan 5400 II- ICE/IR doesn't work well and I get banding that doesn't happen on the native Dimage scan software)
