Subject: Heads up: Provia at a good price

After shopping around last summer, it seemed that Provia in 120 size couldn't be found for much less than $9/roll (in 5-packs).  But I just clicked on an ad & discovered that it can currently be had for $35 a pack from Unique Photo, with free shipping in the contiguous 48 states.  Continental Photo has it at the same price, but their website doesn't seem to mention free shipping.

I don't know if this price is an ongoing thing, or just a blip.  The online sellers I usually rely on are still charging about $44/pack.

Out of curiosity, are there any alternatives to the Fuji transparency films now, other than buying old film from people on eBay?  I see you can buy Ektachrome 35mm, very expensive but apparently not available in 120.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting this deal on Provia 120.

In terms of fresh slide films, Fuji is the only game in town right now. They offer 3 emulsions:
-Provia 100 (RDP III)
-Velvia 100 (RVP 100)
-Velvia 50 (RVP 50)

It may still be possible to find some Agfa RSX-II, which is a 200 speed slide film that was fairly recently discontinued. It may be branded as Agfa Aviphot Chrome 200, or Rollei CR200. Beware, this film does not age well at room temperature. I shot some in-date RolleiCR200, and was very disappointed by major colour shifts (almost no blue at all.)

There is some good news though: Kodak Alaris has announced that they will be releasing Ektachrome in 120 in 2019. Kosmo Photo has provided some additional information.

Of course, there are also some options for black and white slides. In the US/Canada, the easiest is probably the lab DR5, who can process most regular black and white films as slides.

CR200 has a prominent yellow cast - a colour correction filter (blue) should be used when shooting with it.  I usually only use it for planar photography, which I scan and colour-correct in Photoshop.
