As some of you have heard, Yahoo groups is soon discontinuing essentially all of their web based features, including message archives and files/photos capabilities. As far as I can telI, it will continue as an email only service. Back to our roots???

https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups/SLN31010.html has details

I just heard about this yesterday, but backup plans have been in the works for several years. Photo-3d will shortly be transitioning to a groups.io group. https://groups.io/g/photo-3d    Sell-3d will probably be a "subgroup" of this. Plans for other 3D groups are pending.

Stay tuned for more details. If you do not already have a valid email address associated with your yahoo group memberships, now would be a good time to set this up. Reading messages online will no longer be an option soon.    Linda N, moderator

Wow! This is the first I've heard of this and I'm on over a dozen groups. They sure didn't want to give much notice they are scrapping all files on the 28th. Too bad. I believe Yahoo is owned by Google. Are they expecting us to be driven to a Google Group or other? I know nothing about IO groups other than kids like to play IO games. NO farcebook please.

I have set up an MF3D group on groups.io  Invitations will be sent out to members of this group. The yahoo group will continue to exist for now, with limited functionality (email only, no stored archives).

Automatic transfer to groups.io is possible (including members and archives) only for paid groups, $110 for the first year and can revert to basic after that if you don't need the extra storage space. That is what is being done with the main photo-3d group   https://groups.io/g/photo-3d  I would think that a basic/free group would work for MF3D.

Groups.io appears to be an excellent alternative platform, much like what a a well-functioning yahoo groups would be, but run by responsible and responsive developer(s).

I have personally downloaded archives of all the 3D groups of which I am a member. I used PG Offline software. The trial version is good for 30 days and is fully featured.
Not sure what I will do with this data, though.

Thoughts? -Linda

I have been using groups.io for some time now ever since the carbon printing group that I belong to migrated from Yahoo to groups.io.

I am a member of both photo-3d and sell-3d groups and I think both the "automatic transfer" and the "send email to members to join the new group" methods work fine.

I do think that it is worth it to pay for 1 year to get our archives transferred and saved. Like Linda, I also have a local backup that I downloaded using PG Offline, but I think it's important to have the archives available and to have an interface that can be discovered by new members. This is how I discovered MF3D, and I've made many good friends through this group.

Unless someone objects, I am willing to front the 1-year subscription fee to get the MF3D group automatically transferred to groups.io. This means that all current subscribers to this list will be automatically added to the new group. I'm planning to do the transfer this weekend, so speak now if you object. The major practical change for those that use the list as an email list, is that the group (list) email address will change, but everything else will remain the same.

I have downloaded a copy of the old mf3d-forum messages (the active MF3D list used from 2003 to 2006) , and at some point it is my goal to add these into the new groups.io system, if that is possible. If not, I will try to assemble the messages into some downloadable archive and make it available from my website. I will also try to do the same with the messages captured by the wayback machine from the UNH list originally managed by Marco Pauck. No promises on timeline for these items.

If anyone is aware of any other groups that might be relevant to Medium Format Photography, please let me know and I will endeavor to download a copy of those messages and make it available for the foreseeable future. (I have already downloaded messages from:

How many members in MF3d?  Could a small fee from each of us cover the cost to have all the data transferred and hosted on groups.io?

For cost effectiveness, it appears just having one gigantic 3d list would be the way to go (i.e. going back to just one list that covers all possible 3d topics).  Then you'd have just the one fee, plus more members overall to divide the costs.  Of course the big drawback then is that we'd all have to suffer through more posts about boring and marginal 3d topics (like MF3d, LOL).

To add to this notion, I observe that much of P3D content lately has really been about 3DTV, or tech3D, and besides which, often some content will overlap multiple fields of inquiry (e.g. how to best create anaglyphs on photoshop for offset press printing).

It was only after some people started whining about the tech talk - like why it's a good idea to mount to infinity, or what it means to shoot orthostereoscopic imagery - that P3D started to get splintered into all the different groups.  I don't think it really helped much, and the balkanization of the community makes all the different topics more difficult to research or discover (for newbies).

Boris

But I should talk... as I've "splintered off" my own commentary, announcements, discussions into a separate blog...

I'm all in favor of migrating to groups.io.

I don't really like Boris' idea of rolling smaller groups like MF-3D back into photo-3d.  I just skim through the photo-3d digests I get, and many of the posters I don't bother reading.  But on the rare occasions that something is posted to MF-3D, I will definitely read it.

Ian, please tell us how many members this list has & what the groups.io signup fee is.  I would like to send you my share.  With PayPal that should be no problem.

I'm not at a place in my life where I can actually do much in the way of making 3D photos. I do, however, maintain an interest as well as an admiration for those who pursue the activity.  I hope the archives might be of historical value to someone, or some people, over time.  I don't think a mandatory fee should ever be a requirement for access to the archives or the mailing list, but I can enthusiastically support the idea of making voluntary contributions a possibility. I would certainly be willing to make such a contribution whenever a means for doing so is worked out.

Hello all,

I just got word an hour ago that the folks over at groups.io have begun the process of transferring the archives. It may take a few days, so I will make another post when the transfer is complete.

Thanks to all of you who offered to help with the cost, that is very thoughtful. But I am more than happy to cover the cost of the transfer. I have gotten so much value out of this group, I'm just glad to have the opportunity to give back. The only repayment I could ask for is that we could keep the group active and promote the hobby of MF3D. Engaging with the email list, participating in folios, showing slides to people who have never seen them before -- that would really mean a lot to me.

The new page is located at: groups.io/g/MF3D
The new list address to make a post is: MF3D@groups.io

See you on the other side!

Hello MF3Ders,

[I am cross-posting this to the Yahoo list and the groups.io list.]

Well, it looks like everything went well with the transfer. All the archives from mid 2006 have been transferred, along with photos and attachments. Thanks for the words of encouragement and support.

We "lost" 60 members in the transfer because their emails were bouncing. There were an additional six members whose database information returned an error. I will be reaching out to each of them to keep them informed. There are also a couple members who have left after the transfer. In summary, we went from 331 members on Yahoo to 260 members on groups.io, but as indicated above, the Yahoo number was inflated due to bouncing emails. I imagine the number is still a bit inflated since the list contains members who are no longer interested in MF3D and several who have passed away.

The web "front page" to the new list can be found here:
groups.io/g/MF3D

The relevant list email addresses for the new list are:

I have switched the Yahoo list (mf3d-group@yahoogroups.com) to "all users moderated", so that messages will go to me, and I can direct people to the new list. I will not be deleting the old list in case we ever need to go back.

I think that's all for now. Don't hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.

Best,
